Belated but resolute state efforts aim to preserve open spaces and farmland. States woo farmers with lower assessments and tax cuts in exchange for commitments to stay and work the land, promoting long term agricultural preservation.
Ford President Lee A Iacocca told the AP the company will push small fuel efficient minicars over the next three years to counter import competition. He predicted a industry turn toward better times this fall and said 1976 could be strong for the economy and auto industry.
Albert Minichiello, 62, assistant engineer and captive for weeks, files a class action in San Francisco Superior Court against Sea-Land Inc. and Captain Charles T. Miller. He accuses them of endangering the crew by pursuing excessive profits and charting a dangerous course. The case seeks damages to be set by the jury if won.

Milton Hayes, 18, of Butte died in a one car crash on Blacktail Road near Dillon while trying to avoid a cow. He was thrown from the vehicle as it rolled over him. The state highway death toll rose to 74. Hayes, born Jan 21 1957, was survived by parents and sisters Donda and Andrea, plus grandparents. Mass will be at St Rose Church Dillon with burial in Point of Rocks Cemetery. Rosary is Monday night at Brundage Funeral Home.
A Helena AP poll based on 1970 census shows Woodahl at 49 percent with Judge at 36 and 15 percent undecided. GOP chairman Neill would not name the target office, but both judges have eyed a U.S. Senate seat. Woodahl’s lead is boosted by a Workmen’s Compensation probe into Judge’s administration.
Montana Tech will confer six honorary professional degrees at commencement June 8 in the Fox Theater. Recipients include engineers James Archibald and Richard Mateo of Calif and Richard Miller of Butte, along with Bayliff and Howard from other firms.
