Apollo 10 astronauts Col. Thomas Stafford and Cmdrs. John Young and Eugene Cernan returned toward earth after 2% days near the moon. They entered earth's sphere of influence and targeted splashdown in the South Pacific at 12:51 p.m. EDT Monday, with a 55 hour return flight and a request to adjust procedures on arrival.
Apollo 10 returns from the moon with a near perfect trajectory as Kennedy’s 1961 pledge to reach the moon by 1970 edges closer. NASA reports radiation and cabin conditions while astronauts provide live TV narration of the moon’s receding view on their homeward flight.
Dave Evans 71 of Dell returns to the Indianapolis 500 as pace car driver. The hall of fame racer traveled from Butte by chartered plane then commercial flight for the Memorial Day classic weekend event. Evans will pilot the Cummins Diesel car he drove to the only non-stop finish in the 500 mile race history, now restored, and will pace the start this Friday.
Apollo 10 astronauts used a color TV camera to relay live shots of the moon and Earth from over 200000 miles away. Captain Stafford described the view as a rare earth moon panorama with white craters, brown plains and gray ridges.
Chief Justice Earl Warren scheduled a June 10 gathering of the Judicial Conference in Washington to discuss nonjudicial activities and potential financial disclosure rules for federal judges. President Nixon will ask Congress for a 2.6 billion dollar foreign aid request with major reforms. The plan includes a two year authorization for an expanded technical assistance program under AID contracts with US colleges and universities and proposes creation of an overseas private investment corporation to boost private investment abroad.
Partly cloudy forecast with 75 today and 44 tonight. A Foreign Aid request drew criticism from Republican members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, delaying transmission that was to go last Friday and is now tentatively set for Tuesday.
Ottley R. Tschache a 49 year old Bozeman businessman was elected chairman of the Montana Republican party at a meeting in Helena with 202 delegates voting. Ada Nash was chosen as vice chairwoman and Clark Pyfer was re elected treasurer. Strope and Castles were the other top contenders for the chair, with Nash winning the nominating committee’s support. The June 24 congressional election and party unity were emphasized by Speaker James P. Lucas who urged grass roots strength.
