Scott Carpenter the Colorado Comet smiles after a Navy helicopter rescues him from his raft in the Atlantic ending his three orbit Earth cruise aboard Aurora-7. The ill fated craft bobbed at sea while Carpenter waited, as millions watched the dramatic recovery.
Astronaut Scott Carpenter circled Earth three times then overshot his Atlantic landing target by 200 miles and spent 40 tense minutes in a liferaft before recovery. Kennedy congratulated him and authorized the Distinguished Service Medal as officials reviewed retro-rocket timing and radio blackout during reentry.
Robert Greenbeck of Philipsburg, a Granite County High School senior, wins the national science fair prize and a summer research job at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D C. His exhibit on hypoxia effects in mouse embryos earns the award and he departs for Seattle and Washington.
A U S Air Force C 130 Globemaster transport crashed into a mountain north west of Tokyo on a local training flight. Seven aboard were killed and six bodies recovered. Names withheld pending kin notifications.
Astronaut Scott Carpenter spoke to ground controllers during three Earth orbits describing a weightless feeling and a clear blue sky. John Glenn noted the orbit was safe, while Carpenter remarked on seeing tiny particles and fireflies overhead over Bermuda. Carpenter also mentioned a body temperature reading above 100 degrees.

Johnson faced a two year term with most of it suspended and three years probation for unlawfully converting 3015 dollars from Local 371. Hook Jr Kansas City received a two year sentence for interstate transportation of stolen property.
World reaction to astronaut M. Scott Carpenter's flight varied as Western media carried live updates while the Communist bloc and Cuba minimized the mission. Gagarin slept through the event. Titov had more orbits, Tass and Moscow Radio offered brief reports, and Perth lit up again as rescue crews closed in.
President Kennedy told astronaut M. Scott Carpenter that they are relieved and very proud after his orbital flight and rescue. Carpenter apologized to the President by telephone for not aiming a little better on re entry.
CAPE CANAVERAL UPS Walter Williams said the overshoot by Scott Carpenter's capsule was due to automatic control failure. Carpenter manually piloted during the retro rocket sequence, Williams said, noting the exact fault remains undetermined and that reentry attitude affects impact point.
Montana Power Co. vice president Robert D. Corette urged Girls Central High School graduates to see bright prospects in Montana and the United States. Rt. Rev. Dennis P. Meade led the commencement at the Civic Center as 97 graduates received diplomas in a ceremony officiated by Monsignor Meade and Father Gannon.
A tornado swept through Waterbury cutting a 100 yard path of destruction. One person Killed 37 injured. Forty five homes destroyed leaving 600 homeless and 25000 power customers without electricity as rescue workers cleared debris. Paul Hartung 68 was killed when a tree toppled onto his home.
