Carpenter Lands Safe After Atlantic Overshoot

Astronaut Scott Carpenter circled Earth three times then overshot his Atlantic landing target by 200 miles and spent 40 tense minutes in a liferaft before recovery. Kennedy congratulated him and authorized the Distinguished Service Medal as officials reviewed retro-rocket timing and radio blackout during reentry.

Seven Die as Globemaster Crashes Near Tokyo

A U S Air Force C 130 Globemaster transport crashed into a mountain north west of Tokyo on a local training flight. Seven aboard were killed and six bodies recovered. Names withheld pending kin notifications.

Sweet Words Carpenter Says During Spaceflight

Astronaut Scott Carpenter spoke to ground controllers during three Earth orbits describing a weightless feeling and a clear blue sky. John Glenn noted the orbit was safe, while Carpenter remarked on seeing tiny particles and fireflies overhead over Bermuda. Carpenter also mentioned a body temperature reading above 100 degrees.

Two Men Sentenced After Guilty Pleas In Labor Case

U S District Judge W D Murray sentenced Howard Milton Johnson Kalispell and James D Freebourn after pleas of guilty were entered. Johnson faced a two year term with most of it suspended and three years probation for unlawfully converting 3015 dollars from Local 371. Connecticut Tornado Strikes Waterbury Killing One

A tornado swept through Waterbury cutting a 100 yard path of destruction. One person Killed 37 injured. Forty five homes destroyed leaving 600 homeless and 25000 power customers without electricity as rescue workers cleared debris. Paul Hartung 68 was killed when a tree toppled onto his home.
