John (Jack) Weaver Jr of Butte displays two art exhibits at the Chicago Art show opening June 15. One work is a war memorial and the other a cherrywood carving. Weaver, son of John and Mrs. Weaver, trained by his father, studied at the Chicago Art Institute and teaches at the Milwaukee Institute. The Chicago exhibit ranks as the third largest in the nation, with entries from across the United States after a strict review.

Leonard Calamia, 36, a former Chicago convict and narcotics peddler, was formally charged with murder in San Francisco for the slaying of Nicholas De John, an associate of Al Capone, who was killed on May 9. He pleaded not guilty at arraignment as his attorney challenged in court the habeas corpus writ.
In Los Angeles County a motorist arriving at a roadside scene aided police by identifying the attacker. Mrs. Violet Eunice Asher, 43, of North Long Beach, was found mutilated and bleeding. Henry Alfred Hampton, 39, of North Long Beach, was arrested after deputies traced the car license. Hampton admitted meeting Asher, while authorities link the case to a string of prior mutilation murders beginning with Elizabeth Short.

NEW LONDON Conn May 44. U S Rep Fred Bradley R Mich 11th district died Saturday while visiting the Coast Guard academy as a member of a congressional committee. Bradley 49 in his fifth term was stricken in an officer's room and died in the infirmary shortly after. Rear Adm James Pine said the congressman suffered a heart attack.

In Washington on May 24 Republicans race to cut $6.0 billion from Truman’s $37.5 billion 1948 budget. With six bills worth about 60 percent already trimmed by $2.863 billion, the party faces big cuts in civil functions and military establishment before aiming for a final tally. Report says Godwin Buddy Bush, jailed on a rape charge, broke from captors near the Jackson jail as armed masked whites pursued him. After a two day hunt across Northampton, Hertford, and Halifax counties, officials say a single shot was fired and Bush vanished into the sack pine woods, with no lynching proven.
