The administration aims to adjourn Congress by mid July as lawmakers face a compressed session calendar. Labor relations act action is reportedly scrapped, reducing pending legislative items before a summer recess.
Washington dispatch says proposals to cut taxes and streamline regulation aim to revive business activity. Roosevelt met with lawmakers including Cooper Harrison Byrnes to push a revenue bill, with Doughton predicting smooth passage and Morgenthau likely to testify next week.
In Portsmouth on May 25 AP reports the United States Navy ends a perilous rescue of 33 men trapped aboard the submarine Squalus. A fleet of mercy vessels under searchlights brings the last eight survivors to the rescue chamber as 26 are confirmed dead. The operation ends with the sunken sub secured and men saved after a brave fight against deep ocean dangers.
The Central Power Plant at Bremerton Navy yard was hit by a major fire causing damage to the control board and stopping work for an undetermined period. Master mechanic Harold Parker said an old oil switch exploded while workers tried to add a new unit as flaming oil sprayed the control board.
A civic banquet in the Finlen hotel featured Howard Coonley, W B Weisenburger and W H Hoover presenting the capitalistic system as vital to American life. They argued the system rewards hard work and loyalty, with wealth produced by factories mines farms and forests benefiting all through the industrial dollar. The speakers asserted labor receives the majority of wealth under this system.
Dr J J O Connor of Carroll College Helena delivered the commencement address at Boys Central High School as 61 students graduated in the Fox Theater. The 14th annual exercises drew packed crowds of parents and friends, with the school founded in 1921 by Bishop John P Carroll and run by the Irish Christian Brothers.
The Blue lodges of A F and A M present two bass drums an alto and a Glockenspiel to the Butte high school band in memory of Frank K Mutch and Herbert Daly. The 60 player band plus 40 drum corps will perform at 8 pm directed by L R Kilberer with a program by students and individual numbers. Families and Masonic youth groups invited.
In an Empire Day broadcast from Winnipeg on May 24, King George VI praised pacific relations between Canada and the United States. He said the nations have long resolved differences without force, noting Canada and the U.S. have faced 100 years of divergent aims and interests.
In a stormy special session Butte city council approved the full list of street and alley oiling recommendations for 1939. The vote followed debate on alley oiling and alderman Barry O Leary's substitute motion to adopt the complete list and submit it to City Engineer Frank Curran.
Queen Mary remains in satisfactory condition after a car accident with bruising and pain. An x ray showed no bone damage and eye injury improves. The 72nd birthday party and family luncheon are likely canceled as her majesty recovers at Marlborough House.
Montana business leaders meeting in a state-wide conference heard high officers of the National Association of Manufacturers warn that the United States must preserve free enterprise through broad cooperation and revision of unfair regulations or risk dictatorship. Howard Coonley of New York urged ordinary people to make a special effort to sustain the system and advance America’s progress.
President Roosevelt vetoed a federal cattle rustling bill saying government police powers should be limited. He noted Congress already has jurisdiction over major offenses like kidnapping bank holdups and thefts over $5 000, and warned the cattle theft bill overextends this reach.
