A United Air Lines plane with 10 aboard crashed in a wooded ravine near Cleveland. Firemen reported all aboard likely perished as flames raged for two hours and debris lay scattered including wings on a hill and in the ravine.
Detective Chief Ernest Yoris said Mrs. Mary Eleanor Smith 72 and her son De Casto Earl Mayer 43 confessed detailing the 1921 slayings of Dorothy La Casse and Ole Larson in Anaconda Montana. They were arraigned for first degree murder in the James Eugene Bassett disappearance case.
Routine matters at the regular meeting of the board of trustees of district No. 1 included closing school buildings for the summer and other business. Seven bids were received on a one and a half ton dump truck for the district and were referred to the building and purchasing committee with full power to act.

Richmond California May 24 UP says Louis Canonica aged 58 was discharged after a cast was removed from a leg broken in an accident. He had not recovered when an auto truck struck him, fracturing both his legs, then he was admitted again.

Charles A. Joy, supervisor of Deer Lodge National Forest, reports region No. 1 will not post no smoking signs this summer. Most forests will remain open to smoking except in hazardous areas where fire danger rules and state laws continue to apply.
Washington May 24. Senate leaders push a no compromise fight against a proposal to limit PWA financing of municipally owned power projects. The measure, in the $3.247 billion lending bill, would bar PWA funds from building plants that compete with private systems under public rate regulation. Barkley and Norris urged complete elimination of the restriction.
A broad coalition, led by Northern Democrats and Republicans, pushes the wage hour bill through the House. It sets a starting 25 cent minimum wage rising to 40 cents and caps weekly hours at 40 after year two, with several industry exemptions including fishing, small newspapers, and child movie actors. The measure heads to the Senate where filibuster risk looms.
Uncle Sam aids bluebirds by claiming the federal housing act influence as they nest in a mail box at 1302 Adams street. Frank J. Shane consults the post office and moves the nest, then relocates it again to a tree, and finally places a box on his porch with a guard to protect the birds from cats and dogs while he checks for mail.
Seattle May 24 A Pacific Coast Codfish Co official said he will dispatch two dozen high powered rifles and ammunition at the request of Capt John E Shields to counter a reported influx of Japanese fishermen in Bering Sea. The rifles are to go to the schooner Sophie Christensen and the Charles R Wilson. secrecy surrounds shipping details. Union official William Hicker warned fishermen will act, and 70 salmon boats sail for Mount McKinley under Nakat Packing.
United Air Line officials announced the names of passengers aboard the plane that crashed in Cleveland. The list includes Pilot Martin Brandon, Co-pilot A B Marrifield, stewardess Mildred Masek, and several others with various unknown addresses or origins. Also aboard were EF Weblin a Douglas Aircraft test pilot.
In Prague on May 24 the Czechoslovak government reported deepening rifts with the German minority after Sudeten leader Konrad Henlein met Premier Milan Hodza. Reports say Hitler is sending more troops into northeastern Austria opposite the Czech frontier while German troops withdraw only from Saxony. Authorities brace for potential disorder at Eger during a funeral for two shooting victims, as the cabinet discusses the crisis.
Fergus C Fay of Helena was reelected Montana state deputy at the 34th annual Knights of Columbus convention in Livingston. Officers named include Edward M Dott re elected secretary Thomas Somerville treasurer Jack White re elected advocate and D E Long warden. The 1939 convention city to be chosen later with about 100 attending as the event opened last Sunday.
Two men were arrested after attempting to abduct Viscount Nuffield known as the Henry Ford of Britain. They entered his Cowley Morris motor works office near Oxford and tried to force him into a car before plant security and a nearby employee alerted police.
Scouting in Silver Bow area shows rapid progress in 1938 with merit badges rising by over 88 percent in January to June versus all 1937. In five months 552 merit badges were awarded across Anaconda Butte Deer Lodge and Dillon districts, surpassing 489 for all of 1937.
