Butte-Silver Bow Sheriff Pat Hagel says he dismissed Sgt. Maurice Mulcahy after an insubordination breach by entering a bar against a direct order. Mulcahy, a union leader, says the firing targeted his organizing work and dispute over representation of former City of Butte officers. Deputies fear the bar ban could conflict with duties and state law, creating legal risk and public complaints.
A 30 year old Anaconda Co geologist Steven Arland Roberts drowned when his canoe capsized in Bear Trap Canyon on the Madison River. He floated the river alone and was found after 8 p.m. nearby Ennis. He studied at UC Berkeley and Harvard and belonged to the Society of Economic Geologists. Survivors include his wife Dinah and his parents. Funeral services are pending.
Montana unionized highway and building construction workers begin a statewide strike Tuesday. Pickets to target sites statewide. About 10 900 workers may be out, with contracts worth 160 million halted and wage losses estimated at 3.9 million weekly. Dan Jones leads the Local 1334 negotiating team.
President Carter signed a broad tax cut package totaling 34.2 billion over 28 months aimed at saving low and middle income taxpayers more than 5 billion this year. The plan simplifies filing, eliminates tax payments for about three million low income families, and reduces weekly payroll deductions for nearly 50 million workers. It raises taxes for roughly two million higher earners by about 50 dollars under the new standard deduction. Benefits could begin as employers start adjusting withholding next week.
The wife of avowed polygamist leader Rulon Allred was arrested in Carrollton Texas on criminal conspiracy charges in his death. Allred, an excommunicated Mormon, was shot at his Utah clinic earlier this month. Police linked handwritten threats to rival sects led by Ervil LeBaron.
Sheriff John Onstad said Monday the incident continued into Three Forks at John's Meat Market with losses including beef roast three boxes of lunch meat and one roll of salami from Friday night into early Saturday.
