Berlin May 23 The British said they fined about 40 000 dollars on 1 200 Germans nabbed for black market activities in Lower Saxony. Gen Lucius D. Clay American military governor reported no clear food supply improvement and warned the stock position is one half week lower while reserves total 32 weeks. Meat fats and potatoes remain the major shortages as officials push for an honest ration.

Wool Legislation Passes in House
Washington May 23 The House approved a wool bill by 151 to 65 to raise duties as needed to shield domestic prices. The measure, already Senate approved, would run until December 31 1948 with government price support. The House added import fees up to 50 percent on foreign wool when tariff commission finds imports threaten the program. Fees join the existing 34 cent per clean pound tariff. The bill goes to the Senate for acceptance or rejection with possible conference if differences remain.

Washington May 23 The Senate interior appropriations subcommittee nears restoring House cuts to the reclamation bureau funding. Testimony showed House slashed from 145 952 200 to 67 717 600 leaving 41 million less than intended. At the United Nations the 111 nation Balkans investigation commission urged the Security Council to create a dedicated observer commission or commissioner for Greece’s frontier area for at least two years. Yugoslavia bore primary blame for supporting Greek guerrilla activity, with Albania and Bulgaria blamed to a lesser extent, Russia and Poland dissenting and France abstaining. The majority warned that aiding armed bands crossing borders could threaten world peace and should be treated as a UN threat to peace. Knifing Suspect Captured Near Elk Park Area
Raymond McVay, 42, captured by a dairy farmer in the Elk Park area nearly 24 hours after a statewide search for the abducting knife suspect of Mrs. David Ewart.
