Allied air forces in North Africa and the Middle East report heavy daylight and night raids over Sicily Sardinia and Italy destroying 18 more Axis planes. Four day totals reach 303 enemy aircraft shot down while five Allied planes are lost.
A four engined heavy bomber from Lewistown Army air base crashed in Yellowstone National Park mountains during a routine training flight. Rangers and searching parties worked to locate crew. numbers and names of those aboard were not released pending confirmation and kin notification.
Washington May 23. Treasury chief Morgenthau says the nation needs 45 billion dollars more for 1943 war costs. Congress Democrats and Republicans vow to enact a pay as you go system to cover current expenses as the Senate House conference on the plan looms.
Massive floods from four rising rivers sweep across the Midwest inundating 100000 acres of Missouri and Illinois fields. Levees fail near Perry County Claryville and Dupo while Beards town faces 30 foot crest forecasts and thousands evacuate.
Russia said its air force destroyed 313 German planes last week, raising four week Luftwaffe losses to 1,894. Losses to Russia totaled 71 planes in four weeks, with anti aircraft gunners downing many more. The Moscow radio reported heavy raids on enemy air fields, and Soviet forces claimed advances around Novorossisk and along the Kerchenski Strait amid continued fighting.
New Delhi May 23 British war communique says nearly half of a 20 bomber and 11 fighter Japanese force attacking Chittagong in India Saturday morning were destroyed or damaged. Four bombers and three fighters were confirmed down, one bomber and one fighter probably destroyed, four bombers and two fighters damaged. Allied losses were two fighters. Bombs caused little damage but casualties occurred.
DETROIT May 23 Two mass meetings representing the bulk of Chrysler workers voted to end the citys major wartime stoppage by returning to work Monday morning. About 29 000 war workers were idle after the shutdown. UAW members in three Chrysler plants voted by show of hands to resume at 7 am.
Flames started in a two story residence beside the Northern hotel and razed both structures, causing about 50000 dollars in damage. Stanley Henderson suffered third degree burns in the first building. Origin of the blaze was not determined.
A Sand Point Naval Air Station trainer crashed one mile north of Edmonds Washington Sunday killing the pilot and one crew member. The plane struck a barn after takeoff, investigators said.
Allied heavy bombers hit the Japanese base at Kavieng New Ireland in a pre-dawn raid lasting over an hour. The mission scored a close miss within 15 feet of an 8,000 ton cargo vessel and caused undetermined damage.
London reports say RAF bombers resumed night raids on Germany Sunday after a brief ground stop. German daylight raids hit Britain’s southeast coast causing many casualties, with Zeebrugge and Channel targets also struck by Allied aircraft. Three German planes were shot down.
A tropical rainstorm drenched the Richmond Naval Air Station near Miami in a rare indoor shower that seeped through the hangar used for blimps. The vast hangar measures 190 feet high and 1,100 by 340 feet.

A seismic event lasting several seconds was recorded Saturday in Turin and across parts of Piedmont Italy according to Rome and Berlin radios. The notice notes the earthquake occurred on Saturday with reports reaching multiple Italian regions.
On May 23 the U S Navy reported a failed raid by 15 Japanese twin engined bombers on two American naval units off Attu in the Aleutians.
