Squalus crew feared dead as rescue delayed near Portsmouth

Anaconda Man Elected K C State Deputy

Jack L. White of Anaconda was elected state deputy of the Knights of Columbus lodge at the Montana state convention in Billings. He will succeed Fergus C. Fay of Helena. Butte Proves Wettest Montana Locality After Storms

Drenching storms Monday and Tuesday boosted Butte to the state's wettest spot with .97 inches in a day and 1.85 inches over two days. May total rose to 3.27 inches, a new high since records began. Heavy rainfall damaged county highways delaying Montana Highway Department oiling work, while forecasts called for partial clouds and scattered showers.

Boys Central High Plans Commencement At Fox Theater

The 15th annual commencement of Boys Central High School is tonight at the Fox theater. Sixty graduates will receive diplomas from Most Rev Joseph M Gilmore bishop of Helena. Dr J J O Connors Carroll College Helena will deliver the address at 815 PM. Bernard Sullivan will receive the Bausch and Lamb award for top science grade and pursue eastern university study. Sullivan and O Connell are noted for high grades and activities including publications and drama. Medals for scholarship will be presented by Judge J J Lynch on behalf of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

County Rural Pupils 10 Get Awards Today

Fourteen rural grade school pupils in Silver Bow county who won scholastic honors in the two annual scholarship tests conducted by Miss Maybelle Hogan will receive ribbon awards at today's rural school program at Ramsay schoolhouse. The tests were in January and April. top pupils in each grade for both tests will be honored.

Fund Drive for Jubilee Leaps Ahead

Butte moves toward the Treasure State Jubilee with a four day fundraising push. By noon $680 of a $5,000 goal was raised as 70 workers mobilized merchants and residents. Officials expect a strong response after 1,800 letters mailed, aiming to raise about $20,000 for a July 1 to 9 nine day celebration drawing up to 50,000 visitors.

Diving Bell May Get First Test In Squalus Salvage

The Navy may test a nine ton deep sea diving bell to rescue 59 personnel trapped aboard the sunken submarine Squalus off New Hampshire. If raising efforts fail, this marks the first real rescue use after years of practice with the chamber designed by submarine salvage experts.

Odd Fellow Fraternity to Honor Distinguished Guest

Members of the Odd Fellow fraternity in Butte and nearby towns gather at Fidelity hall on West Broadway to greet George S. Breiel of Southgate Kentucky director of development and extension of the sovereign grand lodge. The meeting is open to the public and will feature an entertainment program before an address by Breiel with participants Art Chappelle Martha Wills Hazel Benjamin and a quartet led by John M.
