Montana state highway commissioners push upgrading over rebuilding to stretch funds. They consider widening sections and adding shoulders as a practical, prudent approach for 10 to 15 years, with Kalispell commissioner Stanley Halvorson noting no full study needed. Van Delinder urges timely action.
UPI reports a Buddha’s birthday cease-fire briefly quieted fighting but Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces violated truces. In the Central Highlands American troops endured a heavy assault near Jackson’s Hole with about 400 North Vietnamese and similar American strength. U.S. losses were at least 8 dead and 75 wounded, while the Communists counted 205 dead. U.S. jets shot down a MIG21, the month’s 26th.
Egypt decided to close the Tiran Straits in the Gulf of Aqaba cutting off Israeli shipping to the Red Sea. Egyptian troops will stop any approaching Israeli vessel at Sharm el Sheikh. Israel says such interference would be an act of war.
The Supreme Court directed a lower federal court to reconsider Hoffa in a 1964 Chicago mail fraud case tied to union pension funds to ensure no tainted evidence from alleged eavesdropping. Hoffa remains in Lewisburg Prison after a Chattanooga jury conviction for tampering.
The Butte Chamber of Commerce launches a one day drive led by membership chairman Earl M. Genzberger. About 20 members will canvass the city seeking new memberships to expand area development efforts and support active chamber leadership.

Merrill Henderson a 29 year old former Deer Lodge Bank & Trust assistant cashier faces a jury trial on two counts of fraud and embezzlement. Federal Judge W D Murray presides. Prosecutors called five witnesses and recessed after four, with a sixth to testify on resumption. Henderson pleads innocent and resigned about April 1 1966.
Montana officials urged stronger federal participation to help set state air pollution standards. Ben Wake and Dr. John S. Anderson said federal backing and expertise would bolster standards facing industry opposition before a Friday public hearing. They noted no coordinated federal‑state effort and advocated national air quality standards to aid Montana.
