An armada of nine US Air Force planes attacked near Hanoi hitting Quang Soui barracks and Phuoc Qui depot. The raid killed a U S adviser and five government troops, with a U S soldier dieing in action as the Viet Cong ambushed near Ben Cat.
Butte High School put on a strong show at the State Interscholastic Double AA track meet in Missoula. Bob Hawke of Butte set multiple field records while Great Falls Public won overall honors and Granite County High School of Philipsburg claimed the Class C title. Paris reports President Charles de Gaulle has publicly launched a drive to reform NATO. Foreign Minister Couve de Murville says NATO’s unwieldy structure dilutes France’s defense role and calls reform when the 1969 term ends. The move challenges Western European unity and German defense participation.
Two transient men killed in a Northern Pacific freight derailment near Gold Creek 20 miles northwest of Deer Lodge were identified as Charles Garner 41 and John Belgard 50 by the Powell County Sheriff. Garner worked as a truck driver at the 71 Ranch near Martinsdale. Belgard, a former prisoner released from Montana State Prison, had a Hill County sentence for second degree assault. Bodies were recovered after wrecking cranes cleared debris. authorities said they were found in the cab area of a power shovel on a flatcar.

More than 30 Butte residents volunteer as interpreters via the Butte Volunteer Interpreters Language Bank funded by the Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club. The service, chaired by Dr. R. G. Kreeze, assists travelers and new residents who lack English, aiming to boost hospitality and international understanding. A list of interpreters by language is available at hotels, restaurants, depots, the Chamber, and other service venues.
The United States has spent over 31 billion dollars on missiles since their development, but none of these guided weapons has been used in Viet Nam. Experts cite accuracy needs, limited damage areas, and policy restricting nuclear arms as reasons, with ICBMs and Polaris carrying nuclear warheads.
A Havre contractor Otto Baltrusch piloted a private plane possibly carrying two other people. The Montana Aeronautics Commission reported the aircraft as several hours late and presumed down near Helena while en route from Lewistown to Havre.
Charles Shepherd 57 a long time Dillon area ranch worker died when a tractor overturned pinning him beneath it on a washed out spillway 14 miles southwest of here. Coworker Lee Chestnut tried to free him but he died within minutes. Funeral services are pending in Dillon.

A Goya portrait valued at 392000 dollars, stolen from the National Gallery on August 22, 1961, was found in Birmingham railway baggage room and returned to the gallery. The thief, who claimed various ransoms, abandoned the painting after three years nine months and left a note saying he erred but could not retreat.
Montana School of Mines will hold its annual honors convocation Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Library Museum. Dr Edwin G Koch will preside. Student recipients of scholarships academic and athletic awards and loan funds will be named. Students faculty relatives and friends are invited.
