Senator Hubert H. Humphrey warned Tuesday that administration forces will mount a strong fight to push Medicare back in Congress. He spoke as Democrats prepared to press for expanded coverage and funding, signaling a high-stakes clash over the program's future.
A Continental Airlines plane with 44 aboard including seven crewmen was missing between Kirksville and Kansas City. Flight 11 en route from Chicago to Los Angeles was due in KC at 9:40 p.m. CST, last heard from near Kirksville at 9:15 p.m. CST Tuesday.
Former Montana State University coach Forrest Frosty Cox died suddenly at 53 in a Missoula hospital after a brief illness. Cox coached seven years at MSU, facing termination amid a heated policy controversy before his death, and was a native of Oklahoma planning a Kansas start to his career in 1932.
HELENA UPI The State Highway Commission delayed a decision on bypassing Harlem in the U S 2 reconstruction until it has economic analyses of all alternate routes. The board was evenly split on whether to bypass towns with new highways or route them along main streets after a day of argument.
Butte expects mostly cloudy skies with afternoon or evening thunder through Thursday and slightly warmer with a high near 62. East of Divide anticipates sunny Wednesday morning, then partly cloudy with scattered showers or thundershowers, and cooler conditions by Thursday. West of Divide shows clouds and showers, highs 60s to low 70s, with cooler Thursday.
Lewistown merchants reported surprisingly little damage as flood waters in Central Montana receded. Operation Mopup was winding down while a clearing trend moves into the state. Sandbags protected a 15 block area and goods were moved to upper floors. basements flooded and pumping continued. Debris from Spring Creek and East Fork was cleared by homeowners, merchants, and highway crews after heavy rain since Sunday and Monday.
Sheridan marks ninety six years of postal service with the dedication of a modern one story post office built under the lease plan. The facility offers a 1800 square foot floor space, lobby lock boxes, public counter, workroom and delivery area.
John F. Hirschy of Hirschy Ranches Wisdom Montana is named a director of Metals Bank & Trust Co expanding the board to eight. E P Frizelle president notes the addition brings livestock sector representation to the bank amid Southwestern Montana economy. Hirschy, son of Fred Hirschy and the late Flora, is a Montana native educated at Montana State College and a cattle industry leader. He and his wife Ann Carl have two children Frederick and Jan.
A U S Navy WW2 recon aircraft with secret radar gear crashed two miles over West Germany near Munich while attempting an emergency landing. Reports say 26 or 27 personnel were aboard, with 20 bodies recovered and search continuing. The converted four engine plane from Rota Spain disintegrated in flight, scattering wreckage over six miles as officials offered varying counts and caused speculation about Army personnel aboard.
A Texas pathologist concluded Henry H. Marshall was murdered, not killed by self harm, after an autopsy showed multiple bullet wounds. Marshall, chief of production adjustment for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee, was found dead on his ranch last June 3. The case spurred a grand jury and renewed scrutiny of Billie Sol Estes’s activities as investigators pursued motives and perpetrators.
Cape Canaveral reports a repaired Atlas rocket and better weather forecast raise optimism for astronaut M. Scott Carpenter to launch on Thursday, with final checks complete and Carpenter undergoing simulation tests. Officials predict a 60 to 40 chance of liftoff between 7 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. as Aurora-7 readies for a three-orbit, roughly five hour mission echoing John Glenn’s flight last February.
Rep. Robert E. Cook of Ohio, seeking reelection, reported receiving $900 in the mail from Ashtabula with an unsigned note reading From a good Democrat. The money arrived as nine $100 Confederate bills.
Butte received designation from the U S Department of the Interior National Park Service as a registered historical landmark. Acting Mayor Bert Mehrens accepted the certificate in City Council Chambers from Ray H Mattison regional historian. Mehrens noted the mining city nearing its 100th anniversary and cited other Montana landmarks Bannack Virginia City and Three Forks as national landmarks.
The Rev. Robert J. McCarthy of St. Paul Parish Anaconda delivers the commencement address for 90 Butte Central High School graduates. Exercises begin at 8 in Columbia Gardens with Msgr. Meade presiding. Brother O Donnell presents graduates and reports, announces scholarship and awards, and diplomas are awarded. The Central Band directed by Martin Cesare with moderator Brother Gonzales provides the music.
Dutch high command said troops killed wounded and captured a number of Indonesians in a two pronged drive on the Onin peninsula in West New Guinea. A combined air sea and land assault was announced. The attack north of Hollandia shattered one group of Indonesians among more than 400 invaders, per Dutch estimates.
In a Hyatt House coffee shop near San Francisco Airport, ex-Great Falls resident Edward Lang Hargrove 48 of San Mateo shot Highway Patrolman Dale Krings 32 of Redwood City then was killed by Krings in a morning gun battle. A waitress was wounded by a fragment.
A 20 member special insurance adjusters board led by A F Hearn of San Francisco began work in Billings to assess about 850000 dollars in hailstorm damage to roofs siding windows and automobiles. New estimates hinge on claims filed as damage reports continue. Bridges washed out near Shepherd stranded families while county culverts and small bridges were also damaged delaying maintenance work.
The Anaconda Co. and metal trades unions resumed negotiations on work contracts. Meetings are held at the Anaconda Co. Employees Club with representation from Butte Anaconda and Great Falls locals.
