Trusteeship plan under study faces Egyptian veto
In San Francisco on May 22, the UN security conference committee rejected an Egyptian proposal that would have automatically transferred all mandates including Japanese Pacific islands to the proposed trusteeship setup. Major powers including Britain and the United States opposed changing the mandate basis agreed at Yalta. The Egyptian clause failed 22 to 5. an Iraq proposal also failed 20 to 6. The plan now contemplates simply that old League mandates may be placed under the new world security organ. United States policy opposes relinquishing control of strategic Pacific areas. A U.S.-British compromise sought to insert independence as an objective for trustee peoples.

Three Montanans Perish in Slide Near Stevensville
In Stevensville, Montana on May 22 a small landslide buried a gravel pit five miles south of town, killing two men and a 16 year old Stevensville High School student. The victims are identified as Clarence Wood about 50, his son Clarence Wood Jr, and Herbert Grim of Belton about 25. The Woods were a pioneer ranching family. Grim worked on the ranch. A passerby spotted coats and hats, triggering the rescue that uncovered the trio hours later. The men were loading sand in a four wheel trailer pulled by a small tractor when the slide buried both equipment and bodies. Survivors include Wood's widow, three daughters, and his father Ben, all of Stevensville.
