Jed Cook’s son Les Cook, Montana Tech chancellor for six years, announces June 30 retirement. The Utah cattleman Jed Cook, nearly 99, was remembered as a rugged cowboy who rode in a Pony Express reenactment. Ibapah hosted a Pony Express station in 1860 and 1861 as the Cook family ranched there.

New BID for Uptown Butte nears launch

Butte-Silver Bow commissioners approved a BID in December and plan an ordinance to establish a seven member BID board. The chief executive has named seven trustee candidates, to be confirmed after ordinance passage. If all goes to plan, the board meets first in July and the district would raise about $200,000 annually for maintenance security and promotions in Uptown Butte.

Montana tourism surges past records amid lower spending

Montana saw a 9 percent rise in nonresident visits in 2024 to 13.79 million, an all time high above the 12.84 million peak in 2021. Despite the surge in visitors, total nonresident spending fell 8 percent to 4.93 billion dollars, per the Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research at the University of Montana.
