A middle aged woman in Glen Ellyn removed a pinching girdle while driving and entangled it with brakes and accelerator causing the car to veer. Police saw the lurching vehicle and stopped it without issuing a ticket as she was extremely embarrassed.
Linda Joy Hardy, who battled cancer since 1972, died after designating a family to adopt her three children Sheri 13 Joey 11 and Amber 7. The case drew nationwide offers and a $9,000 trust, but subsequent legal troubles and divorce left the children in social worker care with welfare support.
Senator Frank Church of Idaho arrives at Bert Mooney Airport by chartered plane about 5 30 for the Jefferson Jackson Day dinner with Church as main speaker at 7 pm in the Finlen Hotel. Hotel reports 300 reservations and about 350 expected. attendees include Mrs Church Gov and Mrs Tom Judge Ted Schwenden Rep Max Baucus Rep and Mrs John Melcher and other candidates. Three Forks High School voters elected the girls to officer posts for the coming year. Karen Durham became president Kris Peyer vice president and Cindy Hamilton secretary treasurer. Increasing clouds and weekend thundershowers forecast with today reaching 70 and 40.
A charter bus carrying 53 people including 2 faculty advisers from Yuba City High School choir crashed off a highway ramp in Martinez California. Twenty eight people were killed and many others injured when the bus rolled 30 feet to concrete. Rescue teams using more than 20 ambulances evacuated survivors to area hospitals as two cranes attempted to right the flattened vehicle. The driver Evans Prothero 49 was identified by a school transport official. Debris and personal effects lay near the wreck as priests administered last rites.
State prison inmate Lavon Bretz testified he meant election tactics when saying he wanted Atty. Gen. Robert Woodahl gotten rid of. He denied plans to harm Woodahl and described eight months in isolation, as trial continues with co-defendant Merrel Cline yet to testify.
Butte and similar cities see insurance bills rise sharply from about 27000 in 1974 75 to roughly 62000 in 1975 76. City officials cite increased risk from liability claims and expanded safety programs as factors while noting federal job programs raise payroll and insurance baselines.
A federal court document details 26 individuals contributing 14120 to Gov. Tom Judge in 1972 and two Kalispell groups funneling 9500 to his political club. The list, hand printed by James Carden, links to a workers' compensation probe and names L. R Bretz, a disbarred Great Falls lawyer, among others. Bretz faces trial on an alleged conspiracy to have Woodahl assassinated. Carden claims he personally gave Judge 1250 of the money and lists several cash and check contributions dated 1972. The matter arises in U.S. District Court for Montana Billings division.
