Tornado Toll Tops 24. Fargo Fugitives Shot Near Glendive
A Fargo jail escapee Walter Axel Johnson, 37, was killed by posse fire while crouched in a hay manger on a Glendive area farm in a multi state manhunt ending in a barn gun battle. Coroner notes a heart wound with powder burns suggest close range. Johnson fled after slugging officers in Fargo and was tracked from Glendive to the Newton ranch with the manhunt extending across the Dakotas, Idaho, and Washington. Sheriff Kalberg and FBI agents used a plaster foot cast to follow footprints in mud under light rain. Johnson’s death may have been self-inflicted or caused by the posse.

The Bagdad temple Shrine ceremonial in Butte drew many Nobles from out of town including 20 from Idaho Falls and about 50 from Bozeman. Local groups such as Gallatin County Shrine club Al Bedoo of Billings and Algeria of Helena participated along with Western Montana Shrine club in a colorful afternoon and evening event at the Fox theater and temple ballroom. The day began with lunch, included a 6 o'clock dinner, and featured an exhibition drill by visiting members followed by a band concert.

Bozeman May 21. E T Sumner an elderly Bozeman barber from Gallatin Gateway was fatally injured when his Model A car collided with a light locomotive at the north Rouse street crossing. The westbound freight had just cleared the crossing when the engine moved onto another track and struck Sumner as he started to cross.

Fire at Berlin train strikes injures several workers
German police in eastern Berlin opened fire on striking railway workers at two elevated stations in the American sector. Western authorities reported several wounded as a train with Russian zone police aboard entered Neukolln station around 2:30 a.m. German time.
