Secretary Hull calls for genuine friendship among nations and a return to fair exchange as the United States pursues commerce and orderly political principles. He cites reciprocal trade gains but warns that sustained thriving commerce underpins American prosperity and liberties.
Four long term convicts escaped from the Idaho penitentiary by sawing bars. A 125 officer manhunt surrounded the 50 mile mountainous region north of Boise. Warden Meredith reported a Banks Idaho break in with a 38 caliber revolver and 15 rounds stolen. The fugitives were described as mighty tough.
Speaker Bankhead cautioned against spreading un American ideas during a Washington cathedral memorial massing of the colors. He warned Congress will pursue remedies for a diseased body politic and suggested Dies committee testimony on plots to overthrow the government and anti Jewish campaigns, naming potential witnesses.
In Piqua Ohio today three freight trains crashed on the Pennsylvania double track. A freight train paused to take on coal and the second struck it from behind derailing both locomotives. A fast Chicago to New York fruit train then collided with the wreckage scattering debris for hundreds of feet. Three trainmen were killed and four injured.
A Pole killed a German citizen of Danzig in a border incident heightening the German Polish dispute. Britain moves toward Soviet Russian mutual aid while Britain and France seek Moscow involvement. Italian Foreign Minister Ciano met Hitler in Berlin amid the German Italian alliance signing as Warsaw and Danzig protest the clash.
A private plane carrying seven people en route from Chicago to Oakland crashed in a field 15 miles east of Coalville Utah killing one man and injuring others. Inspector E E Hughes of the Civil Aeronautics Authority could not identify the aboard. The Salt Lake City Tribune reported three men three women and a little girl were aboard.
Missoula man Ernest La Casse named head of the St Jean Baptiste society at its one day Anaconda convention with more than 100 attendees from Anaconda Butte Missoula Frenchtown Helena. The meeting included a business session a banquet and a dance at the Montana hotel.
Representatives of fraternal and other organizations will meet at 7 30 PM in the Chamber of Commerce after invitations from the Treasure State Jubilee casting committee. They seek groups to fill units of Bullion Bandits and Builders, a Montana history show staged July 1 to 4. Individuals may enroll at the Chamber of Commerce.
Theodore H. Emery 70 a Butte resident for 30 years died last night at his Colonial apartments home after years of poor health He fathered Dr C E Emery a Butte physician Born in St Joseph Missouri he moved west in 1889 worked in Butte Anaconda Standard cashier Then in Hollywood California In recent years he managed the Colonial apartments He belonged to the Butte lodge of Elks His wife died in a car accident two years ago Funeral arrangements pending at Daly Shea mortuary.

Anglers flocked to streams across the Butte region as Montana opened its fishing season. A 62 degree day and muddy waters produced mixed results with many fish caught including a 10 pound Loch Leven trout. George Ostwald of Billings led with a perfect limit of 15. One trip to the Big Hole near Melrose yielded 10 fish though cold water caused a dunk for Bob Martin and Jess Copenhaver.
Dionne quintuplets depart Callander Ontario by special train to Toronto to meet King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Police guard their escort as 800 townsfolk bid them farewell amid band music and gifts. parents Olivia and Elzire Dionne join in the excitement, with Victor left at home under care.
President Roosevelt is due to speak tonight at the first annual forum of the American Retailers' Federation. The event highlights "little business" and the audience includes executives who interact daily with the American public, raising expectations for a clear outline of his views on national economic issues.
Postmaster General James A. Farley visited the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island on post office day. A 19 gun salute greeted him as he arrived from the Bay Bridge and military honors were bestowed at the Court of Nations. He praised federal help in the expo and noted the island's future role as an airport after the fair. A California commission reception followed in the state building.
Blackwell Oklahoma May 21 four men died and three others were overcome in a gas filled dairy well. Lowell Curry 26 climbed halfway down the 3 foot well to repair a pump, gas fumes felled him and he fell into water. Aaron Briggs 49 co owner Napier Briggs 19 and John Pennewell 22 died while attempting rescues. Two firemen and a policeman were overcome but revived.
In a radio forum Senator Vandenberg denounces “Santa Claus spenders” and urges restraint, while Senator Minton argues spending must continue until private business absorbs unemployment. Vandenberg offers steps to balance the budget and curb new federal programs, with Roosevelt’s 1933 warning cited.
A spokesman for 14 city and regional tourist bureaus praised Montana’s scenery while visiting Butte. The group, touring Montana attractions, will report back to Washington and Oregon bureaus to boost early next season. Grace Kirkpatrick of Spokane chamber of commerce noted many eastern travelers start in California then tour the coast before returning home.
