Montana Governor Greg Gianforte vetoed House Bill 547 after months of feuding between paid and volunteer fire departments in Butte Silver Bow County. The bill, backed by state and local officials with bipartisan House and Senate support, would remove protections for volunteers in consolidated government and create legal uncertainty about their duties. Gianforte called the measure risky and destabilizing for rural emergency services.
About 40 residents attended a Deer Lodge panel on the upper Clark Fork River decline. Presenters from federal and state agencies a nonprofit scientist a citizens group and ranchers discussed the mystery and noted the Natural Resource Damage Program has provided $1 million for WTF research.
A Missoula County judge preliminarily blocked HB 121, the bathroom bill, ruling it violates transgender Montanans constitutional rights. The ruling bars enforcement while the case proceeds, and the state vows an appeal to the Montana Supreme Court.
