Indian tribes gain bison through transfer program progress and limits

Interagency Bison Management Program officials tribal representatives and state and federal staff gathered May 15 at Chico Hot Springs to review the Yellowstone bison transfer program. Since 2018 414 disease free bison have been moved to 26 tribes across 12 states, marking cultural healing and gradual restoration while highlighting ongoing political and logistical hurdles including boundary fencing and possible capture or quarantine when bison cross lines.
