A powerful quake jolted Mexico City and southern Mexico on Saturday, injuring many and causing panic as walls cracked and elevators failed. Seven states felt the tremor, with Mexico City reporting three deaths and rail and power disruptions affecting the region.
United States and Communist China traded threats as U S troops reinforce Thailand. About 500 more U S Army and Marine combat troops landed from Hawaii with 500 more en route to push U S strength toward 5 000 along the Laotian border. General Harkins toured Marine camps near the Laotian frontier and prepared to visit Army camps before returning to Saigon to confront Viet Cong. Peiping warned it cannot tolerate new American advances near China’s coast, echoing prior warnings and signaling a potential broader conflict.
Teamsters chief James R. Hoffa dismissed a federal indictment accusing him of taking over one million dollars as a harassment tactic by the Kennedy faction. He told 1,200 New Jersey Teamsters auxiliary members that court actions would reveal their own witnesses and story, pleading innocent to Taft Hartley violations and illicit collection linked to a Nashville auto transport firm.
John P Morse 66 longtime Anaconda businessman and former theater entertainer died in St Anns Hospital after a May 6 admission. Born November 16 1895 he lived at 309 Oak and left three daughters and eight grandchildren. He worked in confectionery miniature golf and duck pin bowling after returning from Hollywood and supported local sports and the Methodist church. Funeral arrangements are with Finnegan Co. Funeral Home.

In New York a car driven by Most Rev Joseph P Denning auxiliary bishop of Brooklyn plowed into a drum and bugle corps of 150 children waiting outside St Rita's Church for confirmation rites injuring at least 20. Three remain in critical condition at Elmhurst Hospital. Denning was questioned then returned to lead the ceremony.
Irregularities found in Carpenter space vehicle caused two-day postponements to his Atlas mission from Cape Canaveral. technicians worked around the clock to fix parachute systems and meet weather and electronic test hurdles before a three-orbit flight aimed over the mid Atlantic.

He decries opponents of his programs, cites Grover Cleveland on standing for something, and frames his agenda as aid for individuals and families.
In Butte and Anaconda rumors claimed the BA and P Railway would be abolished in favor of a Northern Pacific spur into Anaconda. Officials and union leaders dispute the talk, noting no formal application and citing expected daily ore and freight movements related to the Anaconda concentrator and steel plant.

Lelia Maye Carman born January 27, 1876 in Clarinda Iowa died Saturday at a local hospital at age 86. She taught 30 years at Webster School retiring in 1943 and was the oldest member of the First Presbyterian Church. Services Monday at 2 at the First Presbyterian Church with burial in Mount Moriah Cemetery. White's Funeral Home in charge.
Ninety Boys Central High School students will receive diplomas Wednesday night at 8 o'clock in Columbia Gardens Pavilion. The Rev. D. P. Meade will preside and the commencement address will be given by the Rev. Robert J. McCarthy. Brother C. A. O'Donnell will present graduates and deliver the principal's report. The Boys Central Band will provide the musical program with selections including Star Spangled Banner Prudence Overture Little Gypsy Overture Graduation March and All Hail Central. Msgr. Meade will award scholarships and prizes at diploma time. The list of graduates includes Donald J. Anderson, Paul F. Armstrong, Robert S. Ash, Walter E. Berg, and others.

Anaconda church marks the golden jubilee of Father Timothy Moroney’s ordination with an 11 a.m. mass at St Peter church. A 2:30 p.m. reception follows at Anaconda Central High School. Moroney has served in Anaconda since 1950 and earlier from 1912 to 1915, with a thanksgiving mass attended by clergy from across Montana.
A delayed traffic fatality report increased the state's highway death toll to 65, down from 85 a year earlier. Warren Rogers Dahl, 25, of the 2nd Reserve, died from injuries in a two car crash east of Poplar on May 7. His brother Alvin Dahl was injured along with other occupants Willard Scott and Ernest Olness who were hospitalized.
Robert D. Corette of Montana Power will speak at the Girls Central School graduation. Ninety seven graduates will receive diplomas at the Civic Center ceremony starting at 8 p.m. The Rev. James P. Gannon will present the graduates, with Rt. Rev. Msgr. Dennis P. Meade giving diplomas. Father Gannon and brothers will conduct benediction and the event will close with a reception. The program includes organ and chorister performances and Panis Angelicus.
