President Eisenhower described a shipment of arms from Poland to Guatemala as disturbing and warned it would be a terrible thing if a Communist dictatorship gained strength. He called for careful consideration of the arms transfer and its potential geopolitical consequences.
At the Geneva conference on Indochina war a one day armistice stalemate emerged as Western and Vietminh sides argued over Laos and Cambodia governments. Pham Van Dong pressed for inviting two resistance regimes, while Western delegates insisted those governments hold no seats. A cooling off period was agreed, aiming to focus on concrete armistice plans. The session ended with plans for another restricted meeting on May 21 and continued negotiations toward specific military terms. Anaconda Copper Mining Company holds its regular annual stockholders meeting in Anaconda on Wednesday at 10 a m. Roy H Glover presided as chairman and C E Moran served as secretary. William C Potter Howard C Shepherd and Clyde E Weed were elected directors for three years. Shares represented totaled 6 433 705 with 117 771 stockholders of record as of Dec 31 1953.
Anaconda Copper Mining Company said net income for the quarter ended March 31 fell to 4,059,093 dollars or 0.47 a share from 8,100,501 dollars or 0.93 a share a year earlier. Operating income was 12,918,640 on 20,152,795. The decline is blamed on weak first quarter conditions, higher interest charges, and faster amortization, though demand for copper is rising and deliveries are expected to surpass production, boosting earnings in the second quarter.
The Kootenia River in Bonners Ferry Idaho surged to 33.1 feet threatening 40 000 acres of farmland and prompting 500 residents to evacuate. Gov Len Jordan declared a state of emergency as volunteers and Army Engineers built dirt dikes to contain the flood. The Spread Creek Bridge near Troy Montana was washed out, cutting off access to the Yaak Air Force Radar Station and delaying radio repairs.
Washington The Eisenhower administration moved to restart the McCarthy Army hearings next Monday with the President urging a resumption of the televised inquiry. Secretary Stevens takes sole Army responsibility, and Mundt says hearings may last a week or ten days. The case hinges on whether Army officials acted independently or under White House and Justice Department direction, as Eisenhower defends the secrecy order.
City Supt. George E. Haney told trustees that two junior high schools cannot be built in Butte on separate sites under the current bond issue. Quoting County Attorney Nick Rotering, Haney said to proceed would require starting over with petitions and submitting the measure to electors. The board had planned another site election July 23 after learning a majority vote is needed.

The gag shows a character Joe failing basic grooming like combed hair, neat tie, and proper coat fit while a narrator notes the social stakes. The campaign, in collaboration with the National Assn. of Retail Clothiers and Furnishers, aims to teach college and high school audiences the importance of neat dress and proper neck and chest presentation.
Washington The Senate Banking Committee backed restrictions on FHA home repair loans. It would cap insured coverage at 85 percent and require direct homeowner dealings with the lending banker. Chairman Capehart cautioned the move would not deter abuses yet aims to curb risky loans.

Butte aldermen debated funding the Kaw Avenue bridge with no funds available, briefly sparking tempers during a wide ranging two hour session. The council also considered purchasing alley space for off street parking, and heard bids on police vehicles while a claim for damages was filed. The mayor suggested tax strikes to spur bridge funding as state and local roles clash over responsibility.
The Senate approved a nearly six billion dollar bill to fund the Veterans Administration Atomic Energy Commission and many agencies for the coming fiscal year. It passed by voice vote and returns to the House for action on roughly 135 million dollars in Senate increases. The total stands at 5,700,796,413, about 287 million below Eisenhower's request and over 295 million under last year's enacted level.
The House Ways and Means Committee voted to extend federal Social Security to farm operators doctors and other professionals and state and local government employees. The plan follows President Eisenhower's push to expand coverage, potentially bringing in about 3.6 million farm operators and 0.5 million doctors and lawyers.
French fighters and bombers carried their heaviest raids since Dien Bien Phu against Viet Minh rebels around Hanoi. About 100 American supplied planes attacked Provincial Road 41 and convoys while night fighters strafed long lines of trucks northeast of Dien Bien Phu. A French High Command official warned rebels may strike the Red River Delta within four weeks.

Fort Lewis Washington reports Pfc. Frank M. Glassgow Jr. 23 of Billings Montana drowned Tuesday when a boat overturned on Chambers Lake. He and three companions were in the craft. the others swam to shore and his body was recovered. He was the son of Mrs. Jesse M. Glassgow 142 Jefferson St Billings.
