Butte Soldier Dies in Japanese POW Camp in 1942
Pfc. Thomas F. Burger died in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in the Philippines on May 22, 1942, after being reported missing in action. The adjutant general notified his father that death in captivity is official, with a prior presumed date of May 8, 1944. Burger, born July 14, 1917 in Helena, grew up in Butte and volunteered for service after December 1941.

Butte Flyers Freed From German Prison Camp
Two Mining City airmen from Butte and Anaconda were liberated from German prisoner of war camps. Lt. William H. Hammond 24 had been a POW since March 8 1944 and S/Sgt John D. Dedrick ? held since July 7 1944. Hammond was shot down over Nazi occupied Europe and liberated after serving in the Aleutians and Army Air Forces. Relatives in Butte received a telegram via his parents Mr and Mrs George Hammond Salem Oregon. Hammond formerly worked at Anaconda Reduction works and resided in Butte with relatives including Mr and Mrs Guy W. Miller 675 South Washington.
