Clyde E. Weed, chairman of the Anaconda Co ., disclosed over 1.3 billion dollars spent on Montana operations in 13 years including 729 million in salaries and wages. Gov Tim Babcock Montana Power officials and 100 leaders attended the luncheon in Butte as stockholders met the next day.
In Bonn the queen tells West German leaders that the tragic period in British German relations is over and calls for close cooperation between England and West Germany. President Luebke awards him Britain's Knight Grand Cross as Adenauer wishes a warm welcome for the royal visit.
Eight families in Butte agreed to pay 800 for wrecked parking meters after a Tuesday City Hall meeting with Mayor Powers and Assistant City Attorney Hennessey. Meters valued at about 60 each, with coins totaling up to 2.41 taken from the units.
Pittsburgh report says steel contract talks restarted Tuesday with surprise speed. Chief bargainer R. Conrad Cooper and union president David J. McDonald led the session after a strike-averting interim pact signed three weeks ago. The escrowed 11.5 cents per hour wage hold remains to be allocated as talks proceed.
Santo Domingo Maj. Gen. Antonio Imbert Barreras refused a reported U S plan to resign for a coalition government. He stressed he backs democracy against Communism and claimed armed forces support. Fighting continued near the U S held corridor as U N urged a strict cease fire.
In San Antonio Texas heavy rains swelled creeks and flooded low areas including Alazan Creek. Downtown streets flooded three to four feet deep as rescue crews used helicopters and boats to evacuate residents. The Las Palmas area saw the heaviest rainfall 6.26 inches with multiple roadblocks and detours setting in. Police fire and Civil Defense ran double shifts while a teen mother and infant were rescued from a flooded home roof.
Senate schedules a bipartisan poll tax amendment vote for Wednesday to address objections in the voting rights bill. Majority Leader Mansfield seeks to test constitutionality of state polls taxes with AG in court. Kennedy supports the move saying it strengthens the bill.
President Johnson urged Congress to repeal section 14B of the Taft-Hartley Act allowing right to work laws. He cited reducing national labor policy conflicts and proposed extending the Fair Labor Standards Act protections, a higher minimum wage, overtime rules, and strengthened unemployment benefits.
A Polish diplomat's son Marek Radomski aged 19 defected to the West from East Berlin on May 5 using a diplomatic passport. He cited a miserable life under communism and rejected Polish officials' appeals to return. US officials noted no family link to a Polish minister in West Berlin, though ties to Wladislaw Tykocinski are considered possible.
The Montana Board of Institutions will discuss a new 12 dollar daily charge for patients at the Galen TB Sanitarium at its May meeting held near Boulder. Director Maurice Harmon and state health officials will attend the session, amid criticism the fee could force patients to leave. Harmon says there is no plan to remove patients and disputes over the assessment continue.
