A coroner jury absolved Charlotte Schwartz 19 of any charges in the gunshot death of Hugh Howard 33. She testified the shot was fired in self defense when he kicked in a door while she baby sat her infant son and siblings.
The target date for the proposed 40 million Anaconda steel mill moved forward as E. W. Fredell, Gulf States Lands and Indus president, spoke to the Butte Rotary Club. He said 30 to 30 months from orders for 12 million in equipment are needed after the point of no return, which has not yet been reached. He noted Webb and Knapp has invested 300 thousand in research over 13 months and estimated total costs around 36 million for construction plus 4 million for working capital. He remained confident the plant would be built and hoped to start this May, acknowledging delays from optimistic local statements.
Wholesale and retail food dealers in Silver Bow County are urged to meet with federal and county officials Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Judge Downey’s courtroom to learn about the federal food coupon program starting June 1. A San Diego city councilman William R. Hartley and attorney William E. Ferguson and their wives were killed Thursday afternoon when their light plane descended through a low overcast and crashed into a hill near Kimball Nebraska. The four were identified by Sheriff Jim Snyder. The craft broke apart in a wheat field after striking stubble. Farmer Wayne Pile found all four dead at the scene.
MOSCOW AP four Soviet generals and a colonel were killed in an aircraft accident the Defense Ministry said. The most prominent victim was Vladimir Kolpakchi a full general on the defense staff who led the 69th Army in Berlin. Tass gave few details and a Russian Tass version spoke of an aviation catastrophe.
In Nampa Idaho rescuers lowered a 20 inch steel tube into a deep irrigation well to reach 63 year old Herbert A Tiegs buried under sand after a cave in. Officials said survival was unlikely and the search could take hours or days as sons Donald and Dale aided efforts nearby.
William W. Ralston aged 76 of Miles City died after his clothing ignited in a workshop beside his home while he attempted to heat the building with gasoline. Fire officials report an explosion during propane truck engine work and a nearby car garage fire. four mechanics were present. Ralston survived by his wife Ivy and a sister Katy Madison.
An explosion at the Tomcheck Chevrolet Co in Townsend severely burned a mechanic Hank Kropp aged 33. The blast ripped through the showroom ceiling and shattered a 60 foot plate glass window.
Police Judge Seton considers dismissing a complaint against William F. Lynch for excessive speed in a school zone near St Patrick School after defense argues the city ordinance lacks a defined school zone. Testimony from patrolmen Seccomb and Sullivan cited a 15 mph limit. judge may decide by Friday. A separate case saw a $25 bond for Nels Sevalstad forfeited on school zone speeding charges.
A Fergus County High School bus carrying track and speech contestants from Lewistown to Missoula was evacuated on U S Highway 12 eighteen miles east of White Sulphur Springs when smoke forced a stop. The fire destroyed the interior after a fire extinguisher failed. luggage and coats were left behind.
In Nairobi a gorilla captured for medical treatment resisted. A veterinarian lassoed one arm while seven men pulled the arm through cage bars. The gorilla pulled free, toppling the seven. Fourteen men eventually helped restrain the animal to administer the injection.
Lt Gen Chang Do Young announced the arrest of 930 leftists and house arrest for former Premier John Chang and cabinet members after the military revolt. He predicted strong U S Korea ties and said relations would be stronger under the new regime despite American initial opposition. The junta vows an anti Communist, pro American policy and U S support is anticipated to grow.
Space officials план two June Mercury launches a second manned suborbital test and an unmanned orbital flight. The suborbital flight targets about June 2 with pilot options John Glenn Jr. or Virgil Grissom. The orbital mission could occur as early as June 12 returning the capsule after one orbit.
CHICAGO AP Milton Schoch, president of the ace yardmasters of America, said his union will strike Monday at 1 am. A railroad spokesman said there will be no strike. Schoch warned Wilson could tie up every major road. He did not disclose disputed points or worker totals. The yardmasters, part of 16 nonoperating unions, number about 600,000 in total.

Montana west stays partly warmer with similar highs and cooler nights, lows 32 to 42. The table notes 12 hour maximums and 18 hour minimums ending at 5 p.m. Thursday.
Barry J Babcock aged 9 collapsed after being struck by a pitched ball during a Temple City league game. Umpire Al Millham, who is league president, caught him as he slumped and he died in the umpire's arms. The pitcher Michael Hanes, 14, collapsed in distress. Barry's father offered support to Mike and to continue his own boy's baseball dream.
