Clyde E. Weed, Anaconda Co. chairman, told about 400 stockholders that industry-wide pattern bargaining in mining is impractical. He warned such bargaining would drive curtailment and closure of Montana operations and urged cooperation of labor, the public, and government to save operations.
At the annual meeting Charles M. Brinckerhoff outlined Anaconda Co plans to keep Butte economically viable and preserve its claim as the Richest Hill. Vice president Vincent D. Perry described efforts to overcome deep-level production challenges and compete with other copper districts to supply U S markets. Continued on Page 18.
East Quartz block to be restored to two way traffic in a 90 day trial with one way signs removed. Butte City Council approved the change on Wednesday night with aldermen Terry Kelly and Ed Hastings initiating the measure and W B Renouard and Dan Kinsella opposing. Renouard's delay bid failed for lack of a second as Police Chief James Clark reportedly opposed the move.
East Montana to see mostly cloudy skies with scattered showers and occasional snow mountains. Thursday cooler in the extreme east, warmer west with highs 45 to 55 and lows 25 to 40. Friday partly cloudy with highs 50 to 60. West Montana sees showers and snow in the mountains Thursday, then partly cloudy Thursday night and Friday with highs 45 to 55 Friday 50 to 60 and frost possible Thursday night.
Anaconda Co. shareholders elected two new directors James S. Rockefeller of New York and Archibald P. Cochran of Louisville to join a 10 member board after approving increasing directors from nine. Meeting presided by Clyde E. Weed with 79.59 percent of outstanding shares represented. Rockefeller succeeds Howard C. Sheperd no longer seeking re election.
In Paris Khrushchev denounced Eisenhower over the U2 incident and Berlin, blasting the late summit and urging resolve. He warned of squeezing Western powers from West Berlin and signaled a Soviet East German peace treaty could strip Allied garrison rights when time is ripe.
Don Ted Lewis of Whitehall is named Montana Father of the Year by the Montana Cowbelles after nationwide stockgrowers convention in Missoula. He credits family work with youth groups and community service and expresses pride in the honor.
An advertisement notes three billion postcards mailed yearly but still only five percent of total mail. It promotes Standard Post Want Ads to rent vacant rooms, and lists a four bedroom home in a residential district with amenities and contact details.
Silver Bow County residents will vote on daylight saving time in the June 7 primary. Daylight time begins Memorial Day and ends Labor Day. Butte City Council was informed by County Commissioners that DST will appear on the ballot. Anaconda will also vote on DST. Butte and Anaconda have observed daylight time in recent years.
Blanche Fay, 56, wed Jules Mar chal, 90, in Bois de Villers Belgium. The wedding was witnessed by Fay's father, also 90, marking an unusually aged union.
Democratic Sen. Stuart Symington told a Helena audience that the Republican administration blocked development of rural resources and slowed growth in farming, forests, and mining. He urged a new Agriculture Department agency to coordinate low income programs and criticized bans on new power projects as harming Montana and America’s edge in kilowatt production.
At a packed reg ular Butte City Council meeting mayor Vern Griffith outlined a definite library plan tied to insurance details not yet disclosed. Acting Mayor Joe Armstrong and councilmen declined to elaborate while awaiting Friday’s meeting with insurance adjustors on fire policy coverage and the value of the library books.
The Soviet Union brings the U2 spy plane dispute to the United Nations seeking urgent Security Council action to halt all such flights. President Eisenhower says U2 overflights had been ordered stopped as of last Thursday.
Kellogg Idaho youths in an anti Communist group plan a May 26 demonstration against Mine Mill union officials Albert Skinner of Salt Lake City and Chase Powers of Spokane. They say they oppose communist influence in the Coeur d Alene mining district and insist they are not against unions.
Vice President Nixon disclosed that the United Nations arranged for the removal of a Soviet official caught spying in Massachusetts while Khrushchev spoke to the UN. The case involved Vadim A Kirilyuk, with one official returned and the other kept attached to the Soviet delegation.
Moscow reports say Boris Pasternak the 1958 Nobel Prize winner for literature has a serious heart ailment and stomach hemorrhage. He is at his village home as doctors assess his condition.
