Flood fears surged as the Cimarron and Arkansas rivers topped historic levels. Tulsa braced for a 25 to 26 foot crest, evacuations expanded across the region, and volunteers ferried residents to safety while severities spread through Oklahoma and parts of Texas Kansas and Arkansas.
Butte launches the Clean-Up Paint-Up and Fix-Up Campaign with trucks to collect debris from streets and alleys starting at 8 a.m. Mayors Donnelly and Shea lead the effort with County Commissioner Daly and other officials. National Guardsmen assisted in removing a 15-ton streetcar on South Main, torched and cut into sections. Neighborhoods mobilize as residents, businesses, and volunteers scrub sidewalks and paint facades in a renewed effort.
Washington reports the United States could seek a longer recess in East-West disarmament talks to develop new proposals such as an Arctic aerial inspection zone. High level decisions on initial moves may come before a London restart on May 27, with continued delays possible. Harold Stassen, the U.S. disarmament envoy, met at the State Department and planned to brief the President and National Security Council.
George B. Schotte of Butte and Gladys Johnson of Great Falls were named Outstanding Business man and Outstanding Business woman of the Year at Montana State University School of Business Administration awards. Four masked men robbed Fame Inc in Maple Heights a suburban Cleveland discount store for public employees. They cut through the roof of the one story building and hid until it opened at 8 am by manager Irving Mills and four maintenance workers.
Japan indicts American Specialist William S. Girard for manslaughter over a fatal shooting at Camp Weir amid a dispute over transfer to Japanese custody. Tokyo insists on honoring a treaty obligation while the Far East Command keeps Girard under U S control pending review.
Gardens to Open Memorial Day in Columbia with spring blooms and restaurant concessions. The Ronnie Bartley Orchestra will perform Sunday evening June 2 at 9 o'clock Butte time, drawing crowds to the gardens for dance and gatherings.
Ten naval personnel were injured when a Neptune patrol bomber crashed during instrument landing in fog at Glenview Naval Air Station. The aircraft, on a routine training flight from Hutchison Kansas, slid into a pond at the north end of the field. Only Howard B. McCracken of Ashton Illinois remained in serious condition.
The Montana Society of Engineers meets its 70th annual milestone by affiliating with the National Society of Professional Engineers at the Butte Country Club next Saturday evening. Lindley R. Durkee of Seattle, western vice president, will present the charter and speak. A luncheon at the Finlen Hotel precedes a 6 30 social hour and 7 30 banquet. Honorary memberships will honor Arthur C. Pratt and George G. Griswold Jr. Roger Hofacker will be toastmaster. More than 30 new members are expected. Durkee, an area representative for the Housing and Home Financing Agency, is a Montana State College graduate and 1948 honory doctor of engineering.
In Independence Missouri a Japanese warbride Mrs Tomiko Samuel 28 who poisoned herself and three children after her airman husband asked for a divorce was tearfully reunited with Sgt Roy Samuel in her hospital room on Saturday. The meeting arranged by chaplain Rev Raymond Ashenhurst followed her initial refusal to see him. Her condition was reported poor while the three children who drank small amounts during a tea party were recovering satisfactorily.
A Greyhound bus traveling from Richmond to Norfolk collided with a car on a Swift Creek bridge near Colonial Heights Virginia. The car occupants, two people, were killed. The bus carried 16 passengers with no major injuries, plunging the bus into the creek after crashing through a guard rail.
Butte hosts 400 to 500 Montana Stockgrowers Assn members for the 73rd annual convention May 23 26. Sen J S Brenner of Grant president says it will be among the best attended in the organization’s history with officers including Gene Etchart Wayne Bratten Ralph Miracle and Chauncey Flynn among others. Montana Cow Bells members join the event with Mrs Neil Taylor leading their group.

Benny Hooper seven year old of Manorville N Y was pulled from a 24 foot sand well Friday night and taken to Bayview General Hospital Mastic Beach where X rays showed a touch of pneumonia on the right lung. Doctors expect him to recover in a week to ten days with oxygen treatment and rest. He had shown good condition after the rescue and was kept under close medical care with possible internal specialist check planned for Sunday.
Shriners of Bagdad Temple concluded their annual spring ceremonial in Butte with a banquet at the Masonic Temple Ballroom. Delegates from Butte and several cities attended as novices were initiated and paraded on the trek to Mecca. Potentate Walter R. Oleson led the event with Henry Schiesser directing the band.
On Armed Forces Day Washington and nations honored 2.8 million service members as defense leaders warned against cuts. Ralph J. Cordiner urged a military pay overhaul to save up to 5 billion dollars annually. New missiles and jets were shown at Andrews Air Force Base.

The display reflected force projection by U S forces stationed in occupied or allied zones while broader defense policies were discussed among NATO partners.
A masked bandit with a taped patch over his right eye robbed Morris Finance Co in the Lewisohn Building Butte at about 5 30 pm taking all cash on hand. Describer police say the man fled down Granite Street. description notes 5 8 tall 150 pounds brown eyes brown hat jacket and overalls.
MISSOULA The Missoula Spartans claim a historic fifth Interscholastic track title by finishing with 81 percent of points as nine other Class AA schools trailed. Sidney tops Class A with 754 points, Hamilton nets Class B, and Cascade wins Class C behind Jim Grasky scorelines. two new records were set and cameras debuted at the finish.
The score highlights show Missoula 8144, Butte Public 34, Billings 28 with Great Falls 24 and Helena 2344. Bozeman and Flathead Kalispell tie at 9 each, Butte Central 7, Anaconda 6 and Park Livingston 1. In Class A Sidney leads 75 with Dawson Glendive 42 and Custer Miles City 21. Havre, last year’s champion, is noted with continued coverage.
Montana east sees mostly cloudy skies with showers and thundershowers Sunday into Monday. Highs 65 to 75 Sunday, 60 to 65 Monday. lows 45 to 55 Sunday night. Montana west remains mostly through Monday with cooler Monday, highs Sunday 60 to 65, lows 40 to 45, highs Monday 55 to 65. Maximums cover 12 hours, minimums 18 hours ending 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
Oklahoma City dispatch reports thousands fled homes from Tulsa to the Washita River region as major flooding spread across the state. Tulsa, Oklahoma's second largest city with about 240,000 residents, was warned to expect the worst flood in its history.
Frank H. Bartholomew president of United Press will address the Butte Press Club and guests at the Finlen Hotel at the annual meeting. He arrived Saturday and toured mining operations as newswriters from Butte and Montana attend. He spoke from war front reporting roles including New Guinea Aleutians Okinawa and Bikini A-bomb views.
Cairo sources report Suez Canal traffic back to normal under Egyptian terms after a period of dispute. Egypt calls the canal controversy closed and will reject France’s bid to reopen it before the UN Security Council. Egypt says it will maintain a nine year blockade on Israeli shipping and halt any Israeli vessel attempting to breach the ban.
