Captain Charles T. Miller says his crew aboard a fishing boat was strafed and tear gassed by American planes while the Mayaguez crew was being released. He credits pilots with avoiding larger loss and notes the strike helped end the assault. He defended the operation as necessary to prevent further fighting.
The Warren Commission discussed a declassified transcript alleging Lee Harvey Oswald acted as an FBI undercover agent for over a year before Kennedy's assassination. The Jan 22 1964 closed session included Earl Warren and other members who heard claims of a badge 179 and a $200 monthly pay from Sept 1962.

National figures show rising bicycle accidents with about 50 000 expected this year and 1 100 deaths last year. The U S Consumer Products Safety Commission is drafting a national safety code for bicycles and 27 states consider 330 safety related bills. Some states have bicycle paths safety laws school instruction and bike registration measures.
Frankie Baker killed Albert Britt in a 1899 shooting in a St Louis boardinghouse after a love triangle. The coroner ruled justifiable homicide and Frankie later faced fame and defamation suits tied to the Frankie and Johnny ballad. She died in 1950 in Pendleton Oregon.
Secretary Kissinger praised the Mayaguez affair handling as textbook efficient and told a reporter to admit they did something right. He added with a grin that statistically they were bound to succeed sometime.
Northwest and Western executives told a Butte Chamber group in Minneapolis they expect to operate at current airports for five to seven more years. They anticipate future growth with larger jets after 1978 and consider relocating Bert Mooney to a site between Butte and Helena or near Boulder.
