Elmer Ombholt Named Montana State Auditor

Gov Tim Babcock appoints Elmer V Sonny Ombholt 42 year old Dutton mayor to succeed the late John J Holmes as Montana state auditor. Ombholt, WW II hero and former legislator, will seek the Republican nomination at the June GOP convention and assume office Jan 7 to complete Holmes term. Holmes died of cancer in Helena at 74.

Combat-Ready Marines Poised on Laos Border

Eighteen hundred Marines trained for jungle warfare join 1,000 U. S. troops and Thai forces near the Laos border to contain Communist rebels. Britain considers forces for Thailand while Australia New Zealand Pakistan and the Philippines offer support. U. S. plans total 5,000 combat troops to seal the border and aid Thai defense.

Young boy killed in street accident in Butte

Arthur William Triniman, 84 year old Butte resident, was struck by a car on East Broadway near Washington School as playmates described a cowboys and Indians game. Driver Mrs Karen Hockaday, 20, said she stopped at a stop street and did not see the boy in time. The fatality marked Silver Bow County's third traffic death of the year.

Roadblocks Set To Check 1962 Butte Driver Permits

Acting Mayor Mehrens ordered city police to run roadblocks to verify driver licenses after reports that city driver permits sales have dropped. Chief Clark certified the action. roadblocks planned today and Saturday. City treasurer data show 11,235 permits sold in 1961 and 9,668 in four and a half months of 1962. Drivers operating without a 1962 permit face a $2 fine.

Laos princes urged to form national union to avert war

President Kennedy said the United States is counting on three rival Laos princes to form a government of national union to avert a general war. He cited indications that pro Western Premier Phouma and pro Communist Souphanouvong would meet soon, though Far East reports varied. He could not say how long U S troops in Thailand would stay as Laos battles unfold.

Death Summons Mr. Boucher

Theodore Boucher of Boucher Bros. died in a local hospital Thursday morning at age 60. A Butte native and Army World War II veteran, he was a longtime partner with his brother Fred in the business. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and belonged to Skyline Sportsmen's Association. Requiem Mass is set for Saturday at 9 at St. Ann Church with burial in Holy Cross Cemetery. rosary Friday night at 8. He is survived by sisters Rose Harry and Mary Ledingham, brothers Eli and Edward, and many nieces and nephews.

Honors Accorded Mines Students at Annual Convocation

Montana School of Mines recognized several students at its fifth annual honors convocation in the Library-Museum Building. Dr. E. G. Koch highlighted public acknowledgment of scholastic and athletic distinc tions and gifts to the school. Harry D. Greenberg received a $500 mining scholarship from the American Smelting and Refining Co. Cameron C. Brown earned a $300 fellowship from the Billings section of the AIME. The petroleum department announced a $3,000 graduate fellowship from Continental Oil Co. with recipient to be announced. Bradley D. Bilyeu of Wolf Point won the $250 Great Falls Breweries scholarship and a $400 Socony Mobil Oil grant for a senior petroleum engineering student. James T. Conway received a $500 metallurgical engineering scholarship from the American Smelting and Refining Co. The Electrochemical Society awarded Robert F. Johnson the first $1,500 F. M. Becket Memorial Award to support summer research at a listed institute, with Gottingen’s Max-Planck Institute chosen.

Saturday Space Shot Delayed To Tuesday

Cape Canaveral reports a postponement of astronaut Scott Carpenter's orbital mission to next Tuesday due to irregularities found in the parachute mechanism after analysis of the February Glenn flight. The delay follows a late night meeting with Carpenter and Project Mercury officials.

Montana Highway Engineer W E Bawden Dies at 63

W E Bawden 63 longtime Montana Highway Department maintenance chief died in Helena after a heart attack. He oversaw 6027 miles of roads, 707 employees, and an annual budget over 8 million dollars. Born in England, he studied at MSC and earned an engineering degree in 1925.
