A panel of top science advisers urged Congress to vastly expand U S funding for particle accelerators, recommending raising annual outlays from 59 million to 135 million and backing two larger machines including a two mile long linear accelerator. They predicted numerous and fantastic practical results and noted past work already transformed technology and daily life. The proposal also endorsed Stanford University’s plan for a 100 million dollar, two mile linear accelerator with a 45 billion electron volt capability.

Three Montanans Lose Lives in Traffic Accidents
In Great Falls Donald Leitheiser 24 died when his car skidded on Rainy Highway 20 and crashed into an irrigation ditch. Passenger Floyd Moltran 24 injured with a broken pelvis. Both were en route to Sun River. The death toll in Montana traffic reaches 61 for the year. In Wolf Point two grain truck drivers Hugh McLachlin 26 and Henry Peterson 70 died in a head on collision four miles northwest of town. Peterson formerly Roosevelt County commissioner and survived by wife and children. McLachlin survived by wife and two young children. The week’s crashes push Montana highway fatalities to 60 for the year, two less than last year.

Convict Charged In Rothe Death
A Montana prison inmate identified as Donald H. Toms, about 30, was charged with first degree murder in the deputy warden Theodore Rothe killing during a prison escape attempt at Deer Lodge. The charge filed in Powell County District Court names ongoing prosecutions for other inmates.

Reeder Named Administrator for National Resources Conference
Capt E H Reeder USNR has been ordered administrator of the National Resources Conference in Butte October 5 to 16. The 12 day session draws civilians from Montana and reserve officers from the West for a realistic study of available resources amid a divided world. Reeder previously headed the conference held here three years ago. He is a Montana State University graduate and Butte businessman serving in the Naval Reserve Supply Corps. He commanded the Reserve Officers Association unit in Butte and is an officer in the Naval Reserve Officers Assn of Montana.

Seven Children Die in Two Missouri House Fires
