Governor to press state MHD support for coal energy research during a Butte luncheon. Judge calls MHD a direction to unravel the energy tangle. He plans a Denver meeting with ERDA chief Dr. Robert Seamans to push synthetic fuels research in Montana.
Butte celebrated the ground breaking of a 32 million MHD test facility to bolster a 2 billion national coal energy research program. The 53 acre CDIF site in Butte Industrial Park will test components for commercial MHD power by the late 1980s, with an engineering test facility planned by 1982 at about 200 million and potential commercial costs up to 1 billion. Governor Tom Judge and ERDA officials highlighted reduced gas dependence and Montana funding matching federal funds to steer the project.
Montana officials report new federal strip mining rules go into effect next week and anticipate the first coal lease sale in North Dakota in November 1977, with Montana’s sale following in December. Officials note cooperation with ERDA on synthetic fuel studies and credit Sen. Mansfield for bringing the MHD plant to Butte amid calls to protect local jobs.

He praised the Anaconda Co sale to Lee Enterprises as public service and cautioned Montana risks from Atlantic Richfield’s expansion, urging deeper inquiry into state government, prisons, universities, and the role of women.
The New York Times reports Ronald Reagan likely paid no federal income tax in 1970 despite earnings over 73 000 and suggests he used tax avoidance strategies. It notes minimal federal taxes in 1971 and 1972 to about half the average for high earners, with 1973 and 1975 figures likewise scrutinized.
