The Butte district Rotary convention opened with an outstanding program in the new million dollar high school auditorium. Sam H. Treloar led the Butte Mines band in Rotary Marching Song as the feature act joined by the Butte Male chorus Treble Clef club and soprano Mrs Courtney Proffitt with pianist Fisher Thompson. Police detail managed parking as Rotarians and wives filled the center seating.
Prominent Butte Rotary figures host a Montana conference with Rotary International representative William F. McFaddin of Hope Arkansas and district governor candidate Payne Templeton of Helena. The meeting opens at Park Theater with welcomes, reports by William Rae and Edward McFaddin, and nominations for district governor at 1:30. Luncheons occur at Finlen hotel followed by afternoon golf and tours.
Sam Newberry Glenwood Springs truck driver was crushed to death when two automobiles collided a mile north of Denver on the Washington street highway. He was riding on a running board of a light coupe carrying nine passengers, per highway patrol Assistant Supervisor Gilbert Carrel.
Frankie Heffern, blind Butte musician, has come home with his Seeing Eye German shepherd Skeet after two months in Morris Town New Jersey. He urges readers to leave them alone, citing a farm letter that warns public interference with Seeing Eye dogs harms their work and that doing nothing is best.
Police investigated a hit-and-run on Harrison avenue where Ray Braiman of Long Island New York was found unconscious at Amherst and Harrison. He was assisted by Ray Ellingwood and others and taken to St James hospital. Braiman was later dismissed, though still dazed when questioned by officers James Clark and Ed O Connor.
Four persons were killed early today when their car collided with a Monon train near Monon Indiana. The dead include Mrs. Sarah Hensler 20 of Remington Mrs. W D Blake 22 of Remington Hubert Hendershot 21 of Wolcott and Eugene Kercher 21 of Wolcott.
Phoenix, May 14. Robert B. Burgunder Jr., a 22 year old college student, confessed to Sheriff Lon Jordan that he killed two Phoenix automobile salesmen while they lay bound at his feet in the Arizona desert on April 29. He described the crime as the most cowardly killing he has ever known and discussed it at Maricopa county jail with his mother and county officials.
Southern conference officers were announced after a banquet honoring Anna Mae Lochner of St. Petersburg Florida national auxiliary president. James F. Weaver of Helena was elected southern district commander with Ray Dunn Anaconda John Winne Butte Pasil Fordyce Helena and Noel H. Boyer Deer Lodge named to key posts. Portia White of Helena elected district president of the auxiliary.
Lima report says a 5.96 pound boy was born to Lina Medina, a girl just over five years old. Dr. Hipolito Larrabure and 60 doctors witnessed a Caesarian delivery by Drs Geraldo Lozada and Alejandro Busalleu.
In Harlan Kentucky a non-union miner was killed and a man shot on a city street. Officials said the violence has no connection to labor troubles. Brigadier General Ellerbee Carter ordered 557 National Guardsmen to patrol mines and add 200 more troops.
Montana expects generally fair weather Monday and Tuesday with cooler conditions on Tuesday and in the western regions west of the divide on Monday.
Montana Rotarians arrived in Butte for the annual district conference with 24 clubs represented. District Governor William F. Rae predicted the gathering would be the biggest and best since Rotary began in the state 25 years ago. Butte club president John K. Corette Jr. agreed it looked like a record-breaker as the event aims to advance Rotary in Montana.
Post master General James A. Farley warned cadets at the Missouri Military Academy that the United States would go to war to defend South American independence. He stated the policy dates back a century and rejected sentimental excuses for conquest. Continued on page 7.
President Roosevelt directed the Navy to accept a bid from the Argentine Meat cooperative to supply 48 000 pounds of canned beef at about nine cents a pound. Congressman Allen announced plans for a five member House inquiry into Navy bids, while critics question subsidies and a sanitary accord with Argentina.
Harold B. Norris known as Buddy Jackson, 22, a former Lewis town youth released from Montana state prison January 25, was shot Thursday by Deputy Sheriff Phil Wilcoxon in an escape attempt and remained in critical condition in Marysville California officials reported.
Four hundred Catholic high school graduates from Butte gathered at Immaculate Conception parish center for their annual Mother's Day communion breakfast sponsored by the Central High Alumni Association. Classes of 1914 and 1939 were honored. John Sheehy welcomed attendees as toast mistress Mary Burke introduced speakers and performers.
