Reports from Tientsin say Japan may demand Chinese forces evacuate the Tientsin area and Tangku on the coast. The city is tense as reports circulate of impending Sino-Japanese conflict developments amid village bombing and morale contrasts with Jehol.
Milwaukee May 14. Frank H. Jess was shot dead when he grabbed a can of ransom money placed by detective John Riley as part of a trap for extortionists targeting Lloyd R. Smith, a millionaire manufacturer. Oscar Mueller, 23, confessed they planned the scheme from debt in a suburban garage.
French colony members from Anaconda Missoula Frenchtown and Butte gathered in Butte for the St Jean Baptiste society twenty fifth anniversary. J B Marcotte reelected state president with Frenchtown named 1934 convention site set for the second Sunday in May.
Buenos Aires on May 14 reports the Undertakers' Union announcing a 24 hour strike starting at midnight. The action protests wage reductions and seeks better working conditions for workers.
James C Jim Smith 53 a captain in the Butte fire department died suddenly at his home 1101 East Second Street after a heart attack He served 21 years with the fire department including 14 years as captain at the Arizona Street station He previously served on the city police force He survived by widow Mary a daughter Veronica a son Vincent two Irish sisters two Eastern sisters and several nieces and nephews
Secretary Wallace and George N. Peek push a farm relief act drive to raise farm prices. A Chicago area milk price plan would raise farmer prices in Wisconsin Illinois Indiana and keep consumer price near ten cents per quart. If approved the plan may be enforced by licensing refusals to noncompliant milk buyers. Wallace moves to set commodity meetings on cotton wheat corn hogs tobacco and rice under the act.
Scores of Montana Rotarians gathered in Livingston for the district convention. The two day event opens tomorrow with Rotary golf tournament play and visits to Yellowstone National Park. James H. Beattye of Victoria B C and district leaders Arthur Lamey Havre Oliver Belden Lewistown arrived for the gathering.
In Indiana Pennsylvania on May 14 the dismembered bodies of Jams H. Allison a 74 year old farmer and his sister Belle Allison 76 were found in the charred ruins of their farm house five miles from Indiana. Police suspect murder to conceal the crime and say evidence points to the couple having been harmed before the fire. Miners who found the blaze reported a car speeding from the scene. Sheriff A Eugene Wilson said there was evidence the Allisons had been murdered.
Batesville Arkansas May 14 four persons were known to have been killed nearly a score were injured and much property damaged by a tornado that cut a narrow path through two north Arkansas counties late last night.
Japanese air and artillery forces pushed south from Yenlo toward Peiping, dropping heavy bombs on villages between here and Miyun-Hsien. Civilians fled with salvaged goods as Chinese troops regrouped, setting up entrenched positions along the route from Peiping to Yenlo.
Government prosecutors will present their case in the District of Columbia Supreme Court to counter Gaston B. Means story about involvement in the Lindbergh baby kidnapping. District Attorney Leo A. Rover hopes to have the matter before the jury by tomorrow night.

Mayor Archie McTaggart to welcome at 9 30. Banquet at 6 and ritualistic work at 8. Juvenile banquet at 6. Display of juvenile ritual at 4 under several organizers.
The Ohio River flood reached 52 feet in Cincinnati as 5.5 inches of rain fell in 24 hours. Hundreds of families evacuated again after repairing March damage while meteorologists warned of a crest near 56 feet. Two deaths occurred in southwestern Ohio from gales and cloudbursts, including George Gibbs and William Voespel.
New York May 14 Alfred E. Smith four time New York governor and one time presidential candidate tonight definitively declined any mayoral bid. He said he would not accept any nomination for that office or any other on next fall's ballot and that no compulsion could sway his decision. Fusion and Republican leaders praised his stance as clearing the atmosphere for Samuel Seabury to oppose Tammany's candidate.
The Montana forecast calls for occasional showers on Monday and Tuesday with cooler conditions on Monday. Local weather notes indicate a slight cooldown and unsettled spell for the start of the week.
Vice Chancellor Franz von Papen delivered a forceful Munster address defending Germanys armament aims and denouncing efforts to isolate the nation. He urged the Reichs right to re arm and warned of a period when others would be disarmed as he invoked wartime memories. Paris dispatch adds that Norman Davis will press disarmament talks with Paul Boncour to ease European tensions.
Postmaster General James A. Farley called the department a sensitive barometer of general conditions and cited a slight percentage rise in April 1933 receipts over April 1932. He said revived confidence is spreading nationwide and cited the president's courage to break precedent to advance national goals before 700 customs workers at a communion breakfast.
Daladier and leaders in Paris doubt the Chamber will approve the June payment or the December annuity after a recess. Edouard Herriot said Roosevelt would not grant a moratorium and deputies want a full debt revision before any payment, signaling a probable default.
