Trouts Return to Silver Bow Creek Amid Stressful Conditions
Fisheries biologist Caleb Verling and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks tagged 38 trout in Silver Bow Creek to study movement and mortality. Nine transmitters were later found beneath heron rookery nests as eagles hunt nearby. The reinhabited coldwater trout face warm water, dewatering, low flows, reduced shade, and lower dissolved oxygen, with upstream metal pollution and nutrient loads contributing to stress.
