The body of missing Carroll College student John Lee Pfeifer 19 Mandan N D was found Monday evening in Lake Helena at about 530 p.m. by Kenneth Cross. Sheriff Dave Middlemas said Pfeifer had been missing since April 27 after walking away from a car following a disagreement. He appeared to have fallen into the canal feeding the lake and was carried downstream.
The Poor People's Campaign begins a summer-long protest siege on Congress with a wooden camp by the Lincoln Memorial. Abernathy vows nonviolent action to win meaningful jobs and a guaranteed income, as about 400 demonstrators build the first tents and marchers arrive from multiple states.
Charles M. Brinckerhoff of the Anaconda Co. says it is too early to discuss Montana operations after the shutdown caused by the copper strike. He notes Berkeley Pit as a major mineralized area and outlines a long range plan for orderly development with no current increase in pit ore production. The 45-year-old Roman Catholic priest Rev. Charles Boulogne, nicknamed Father Damien, awoke Monday in very satisfactory condition 24 hours after receiving a heart from a 39-year-old donor who died of a cerebral hemorrhage. Boulogne is the 14th heart graft recipient, four other transplant patients remain alive.
