Fierce coast fire in Hollywood Hills destroyed or seriously damaged 24 homes and burned about 1,200 acres in a 10 mile perimeter. Firefighters aided by two U S Forestry planes dropped borate solution to reach steep areas while winds exceeded 40 mph. A five story castle collapsed. Aldous Huxley’s and Spring Byington’s homes were impacted. 500 people fled including 300 Boy Scouts. No serious injuries reported.

Rescued by Police Firemen After Cavern Trapping
Two five year old boys from Butte were rescued after walls collapsed in a tunnel at slime pits east of the South Butte dump. Jerry Ness and John Nap were freed by police officers Joe Zderick and Walter Eslick and firemen Len Gerry and Charles Abraham after about 10 to 20 minutes. Both boys were taken to St. James Community Hospital in good condition and under observation. A separate collision involving a police car occurred en route to assist, injuring a passenger from Whitehall who was treated and released.
