Guam May 14 U P The bloody Okinawa fight neared a climax after a desperate Japanese effort to land behind U S lines was wiped out to the last man. Marines held fox holes on Iwo ridge overlooking Naha as Nimitz said little change occurred in the sector due to stiff resistance. The 24th corps pressed toward Yonavaru. the 77th division moved south of center and gained high ground northeast of Shuri. First Marines drove toward Dakesi to hit the northwest defenses of Shuri while killing about 100 enemy troops in close combat. The Japanese reinforcement attempt was repelled.
