District Judge W. W. Lessley refused to issue a shutdown order for Rocky Mountain Phosphate Inc plant at Garrison. He found no ongoing air pollution threat to nearby ranches due to improvements at the facility.
Gov George Romney named five term Republican Rep Robert Griffin to fill the late Sen Patrick McNamara seat as primaries heat up and the November election nears. Griffin succeeds McNamara in the Democratic seat, setting the stage for a fierce campaign.
Milwaukee attorney James W. Dorsey 69 and his adopted daughter Vivien Rhinehart 28 died in a home fire that started in a bedroom. Dorsey, former chairman of the Governor's Commission on Human Rights, was widely active in Milwaukee's Negro community. his widow and granddaughter escaped. The blaze broke out as Rhinehart slept in the room.
Fred Nelson of Billings, a former advertising man and ex Billings Gazette ad director, is likely to become campaign manager for Gov. Tim Babcock in his 1966 U S Senate bid. Mrs. Virginia Mann of Missoula will coordinate Western Montana activities, and Donald L. Byrd of Helena remains on research duties. Orvin B. Flare, 1964 campaign manager, is not expected to be directly involved. Nelson currently runs Western Litho Print Co. in Billings.
In Viet Nam War action Communist MIG jets fired heat seeking missiles at Air Force Skyraiders near a pilot rescue operation but missed. U S Navy planes flew 55 missions and targeted the Mu Gia Pass while a freighter attempting to smuggle arms was sunk off the South Vietnamese coast. Captain Martin A Mahrt was rescued by a Jolly Green Giant helicopter after the encounter.

The federal court in Butte authorized the United States to file a third party complaint naming General Motors as liable in a suit by Catherine Eccleston of Anaconda. The case, arising from a July 12 1964 accident on Road 406 near Georgetown Lake, alleges the cattle guard caused the injury when Eccleston’s husband’s car stopped abruptly, the road section is Forest Service maintained, and the government argues only 1961 Pontiac Tempests would be imperiled at normal speeds. The government seeks to shift fault to the car maker, asserting hazardous design.

Cahill-Mooney Construction Co. of Butte received a 516 781 contract to add and remodel Mountain States Telephone Co. at 226 W Broadway. D R Duncan said bids were the lowest of four with work starting immediately. Sub contractors include Murphy Plumbing and Heating Co and LaSage's Inc. for electrical work. The project adds 7500 square feet across basement and two upper floors and updates heating, air circulation, and facade.
A man in sunglasses and a tan hat robbed House hold Finance Co. in Billings at 4:15 pm, fleeing with about $646 after forcing cashier D. F. Gould and two employees into a back booth. Roadblocks formed as Montana Highway Patrol and local police searched the area.
Sgt. Dickie Davis Trinkler 20, of Piedmont Missouri, was killed when a helicopter was shot down in a Vietnamese jungle Monday. He had written to his parents that day and had planned to leave Vietnam soon after an earlier return home. Trinkler grew up near Bark's Mountain, graduated in 1963, joined the VFW, and was proud of his service.
