Tass reports Luna-5 will attempt an unprecedented soft landing on the moon in the Sea of Clouds region. The 10.5 rocket, launched Sunday, should reach the area around 10:15 p.m. Moscow time as all systems operate normally and radio contact is maintained.
The automatic station Luna 5 carries equipment for a soft lunar landing, with the probe reported 205000 miles from Earth and 29000 miles from the Moon. Tass said trajectory corrections followed flight plans, signaling a potential setback in the U S lead after Ranger successes.
A report states the rocket initially oriented itself using the sun and moon. Tass notes a signal then activated a correcting engine that steered the craft back toward its intended path.
The Senate 49 to 45 rejected Kennedy's bid to ban poll taxes as a voter qualification in state and local elections. The vote upheld the Mansfield-Dirksen measure, arguing a ban could be a constitutional gamble while poll taxes remain legal in some states and subject to court challenge. Robert F. Kennedy joined with the Johnson administration in opposing the outright ban.
LEWIS T. POOLE reports that neither state nor local law compels Butte or Silver Bow County residents to observe daylight saving time. The city ordinance merely suggests hours for city offices, with no penalties, and outside the city there is no DST law or county adoption.
A presidential blue ribbon committee urged President Johnson to keep five of 11 VA hospitals open and two of four rest homes slated for closing. The proposed open facilities include Bath and Miles City hospitals and Bath and White City rest home, with other sites slated for closure.
Milwaukee Road stockholders authorize a merger with Chicago and North Western Railway to form a 20,975 mile system spanning 15 states. North Western vote set for May 18. The new entity would be the Chicago Milwaukee and North Western Transportation Co and would rank as the second longest in the nation.
U S bombers pounded a retreating Communist regiment near Song Be province about 75 miles northeast of Saigon. Six Americans were killed and 17 wounded in Tuesday’s fighting. Government and U S forces suffered 264 casualties 136 dead and 128 wounded in Song Be and Hau Nghia. A Marine was killed and four wounded near Da Nang. The Air Force said it would employ every asset to hit Communist positions on the Song Be River bank.
The Deerlodge National Forest will require a $7 Federal Recreation Conservation sticker for use at 15 campgrounds and five family picnic areas this summer from June 13 to after Labor Day. Areas include Ladysmith Mormon Gulch Basin Canyon Elk Park Lowland Toll Mountain Shamrock East Fork Flint Creek Cable Mountain Warm Springs Spring Hill Piney Bay South Side Lodgepole Echo Lake Foster Creek Bison Creek. Group picnics at Foster Creek Warm Springs Spring Hill and Bison Creek incur charges.
A strong rumbling earthquake struck Alaska with no damage reported. Seismologists placed the epicenter near the Kenai Peninsula about 400 miles south of College, Alaska, with durations around 20 seconds and felt in Kenai Seward Sitka.
Anthony J. Kindt a 12 year old from Butte was struck by a car in Mc Queen Addition Monday night. He was initially in critical condition after emergency surgery in Missoula hospital and was moved to serious condition with signs of improvement Tuesday.
In Santo Domingo Msgr Emanuele Clarizio Vatican nuncio says he is highly optimistic a settlement will end the 17 day conflict after talks with rebel leader Col Francisco Caamano Deno. John Bartlow Martin Johnson envoy says talks signal possible progress despite ongoing sniper fire in the city. An American officer was killed and seven others wounded in the violence.
Partly cloudy today with a high near 70. Tonight and Thursday expect scattered showers, cooler in most areas. Wednesday brings fairer conditions and highs in the 70s, with increasing clouds and showers reaching western mountains later Wednesday night. Lows will range in the 30s to 40s.
