Holt Addresses Montana AIME Members on Iron and Steel
Grover J. Holt, president of the American Institute of Mining Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers, told the Montana Section meeting in Missoula that iron and steel have powered U S economic leadership. He noted 80 percent of U S iron ore from Lake Superior and described 77.6 million tons mined in 1956 and 87 million in 1955, illustrating with a 6 600 mile hypothetical ore train.

Eminent Anaconda Leader Cornelius Kelley Dies at 82
Cornelius F. Kelley, 82, retired chairman of The Anaconda Company, died in New York City after a long career spanning 55 years with the firm. He rose from a $1 a day water boy on Butte Hill to president and board chairman, guiding major expansions and Chilean copper development through two World Wars and postwar growth. The Miners’ son, born 1875 in Mineral Hill New Mexico, left a lasting imprint on mining and industry.

Opening Of Mining City Clean-Up Drive In Butte

Blaze Claims Seven Children in Stratford Fire
A fast spreading blaze in Stratford left seven children dead in a three story dwelling. Five of the victims were the Davis children found in the second floor flat. Mrs Matha Davis had been shopping and returned as firefighters battled the flames. Two Martin children who were napping on the third floor died later in Bridgeport hospital.
