In his Sunday radio address President Roosevelt outlines a plan to curb rising prices by expanding credit and stabilizing currency via commodity values rather than gold. Lipmann argues the administration aims for a middle ground price level and urges prudent, vigilant scrutiny rather than panic.
New York markets surged as securities and commodities rose and business conditions improved. Salary hikes up to 75 percent were reported, production schedules increased, and dividends were declared. Leading stocks climbed with the aggregate value reaching over 6.69 billion dollars.
Japanese air patrol over Peiping drops warning leaflets as anti-aircraft fire erupts at dawn. Thousands flee, taking shelter in cellars while US Minister Nelson Johnson watches from the Legation balcony. A second plane bombs the Rockefeller Foundation field hospital near Chichow as Japan presses toward the ancient capital.
Missoula May 11. Gregory Rice of Missoula high youth wins the half mile after a tough race and strong wind. Bob O Malley of Butte sets pace in sprints 100 and 220 yards but wind nullifies record hopes. Butte’s Hiawatha Brown and others show speed as Dornblaser field hosts interscholastic meet with 3000 fans present.
Butte's twenty second annual grade school track meet postponed a second time by Chairman John Lindquist and his Exchange club committee. Weather permitting the meet moves to Friday and Saturday of next week after a snowout last week.
Mayor Edward Kelly announced following a bankers’ conference that Chicago will pay part of the teachers back salaries. About $3,346,577 will be paid tomorrow with roughly $12,500,000 more in the coming days. Total back salaries due run around $30,000,000.
Norman Larson of Noxon and Florence Shepard of Chester won declamatory contests at the state interscholastic meet in Missoula. Larson performed Johnny Graham Diplomat and Shepard presented Under the Big Top. Finalists included Arthur Rock Alberton Victor D Orazi Missoula Mary Butler Froid Jeanne Wagoner Billings Carol Knudson Harlowton Edith Morgan Harlem.
Butte Girl Scout council named delegates for a regional conference in Pocatello spanning May 25 to 27. Local appointees include Mrs. L M Van Etten, Mrs. Morgan Wright, Mrs. J C Jaccard, Mrs. L P Sanders, Miss Ida Frederickson, Miss Margaret Small, and Miss Edith Tweedy. Participants come from Montana Utah Wyoming Colorado and Idaho. National head Miss Teresa Carter will attend and visit Butte after the meeting. Mrs M E Bagley coordinates the regional effort with Miss Olga Carlson directing sessions. The Butte representative on the regional board is Mrs L P Sanders. The Butte court of awards will be held next Wednesday at Butte High School with over 100 honors.
Moscow announced to the Chinese nationalist government that China has no rights in the Chinese Eastern railway in Manchuria and that the line will be sold to the new state of Manchukuo. Foreign Commissioner Maxim Litvinoff said the Peiping Mukden treaties of 1924 are void and advised the Nanking regime to accept the shift to preserve Far East peace.
Thomas Eva a former pump man at the Sidney state mine and Centerville resident collapsed after feeling faint near his home in Butte while walking with his son Thomas and companions Owen Bunt and Kenneth Berryman. An ambulance took him to St James hospital where he died shortly before midnight.
The Roosevelt administration finishes a national recovery bill totaling 3.3 billion dollars for public works and industrial planning. A key unsettled issue is the tax to raise 220 million annually for bond interest, with options including a sales tax, a payroll or luxury tax, or a payroll income levy. Senator Wagner says the measure is now ready for Roosevelt to publicize at the White House.
The Butte city council legislative committee agreed on how auto license fees will be divided with Silver Bow county. The county would receive about 73.14 percent of fees from residents, while the city gets 36 percent of city resident fees, totaling roughly 73.14 and 36 percent respectively. Estimated city share about 30,000.
More than 150 members of the Butte Elks lodge attended the annual Mother's Day program at the lodge rooms. Frank Venable, former exalted ruler of the Wallace Idaho lodge, delivered the principal address praising motherhood. James Murphy performed a solo with Harold Estlick, as ritualistic work was led by Wilbur Hanley, exalted ruler of No. 240.
More than 150 students plus 200 adults gathered at Ramsay in Silver Bow county for the track meet spelling bee and patriotic program. Ramsay scored 1122-3 to take the track honors, Rocker was second with 411-3. Joe Malone led Ramsay with 26 points, followed by J. Bens 23 and B. Wedin 171-3. Shirley Demmons 9 of Divide won division one spelling, Josephine Guidini 12 of Divide won division two. Inclement weather cancelled broad jump and relays. participants included Ramsay Feeley Rocker Brown's Gulch Divide Meadow Gulch and Melrose.
Gaston Means testified in district supreme court claiming he knew two men who kidnapped the Lindbergh baby and that the men planned to kidnap Lindbergh for a 590000 ransom. He asserted an attempted delivery to Col. Robert Guggenheim and referenced Harding Mellon and Dawes as connected names.
The bulletin notes unsettled conditions in Montana for Friday and Saturday with warmer temperatures on Friday in the southern and extreme eastern portions.
Washington May 11. Gold hoarders paid little heed to the government threat of prosecution last week, with only 6,564,000 in gold turned in of a total 334,000,000 known to be in circulation.
Helena May 11. Montana's 1933 road map shows substantial progress in improving routes for motorists. Only 21.7 miles remain on the Yellowstone trail and 22 miles on the Theodore Roosevelt highway. both span 700+ miles. Grading surfacing and oiling on 73 projects are slowed by recent rains, with $2,370,000 of work left under contract to be completed by June 30.
