Montana highway commission to consider procedure for the debenture referendum. A prepared statement shows 796.472 miles of highway improvements contracted in January to April under the emergency program. It lists 366.858 miles of new work and 429.614 miles of improvements to existing roads, plus bridges and grading quantify.
A lackluster stock market greeted traders as the Federal Reserve New York cut the rediscount rate to 1 percent, boosting hopes that cheap money will spur activity. Banks' acceptance costs fell, aiding renewals. President Hoover targets military spending for deficit reduction while civil programs face congressional limits and an election cycle looms.
In Great Falls May 11 the Montana diocese annual convention opened with all 29 clergy present, plus representatives from 10 parishes and eight missions. Officers were elected including Harold Longmaid of Helena as treasurer and H. H. Daniels of Helena as secretary. the standing committee was re elected.
Two blasts damaged the roadbed under the Northern Pacific tracks near Butte as an Oregon Short Line passenger train was due. Investigators found the site west of Montana Street crossing and noted a strong dynamite odor. Officials say the repair was completed and no train delays occurred. The blasts occurred near the site of the old Butte reduction works dumps.
Louise Kestler 17 returns home after a weekend with a sailor she claimed kidnapped and assaulted her. Police consider charges against the sailor over his relationship with the minor. She says she attended a theater Friday night before reappearing this afternoon.
The Wickersham commission extended its study to Butte focusing on the cost of administering criminal justice. Dr Matthew East of Montana State University and student Austin Rodrick completed a survey on enforcing law during the 1929 30 fiscal year.
A flight of five army observation planes from Spokane to Dayton, Ohio, made a brief stop at Miles City on May 11. Major C. V. Haynes and the crew, visiting Butte for luncheon, planned a 9 am takeoff next day. About 500 greeted the flyers and inspected the aircraft at the Miles City field.
County treasurer Paul A Rooney announced the 1930 31 tax final installment is due May 30. More than 600000 dollars is owed on the last half payments. Taxpayers should bring November first half receipts or their annual tax statements.
The Butte Chamber of Commerce set a record with 408 ballots cast and 16 directors elected for two-year terms. Named are Samuel Barker Jr., C L Berrien, J J Burke, Louis Dreibelbis, A J Davis Jr., H A Gallwey, J K Hesler, Paul Hudloff, H D Kistler, E G Leipheimer, Ray J McDonald, Archie McTaggart, Charles P Nevin, Dr Peter Potter, Sam R White, and C E Youlden. The new directors will meet with holdovers to select executive officers led by Dr Peter Potter, who will appoint a nominating committee for the slate.
William Schulz a 53 year old Butte miner was found critically wounded with 15 knife wounds at his Hopkins street home two weeks ago. He recovered enough to leave St James hospital last night with two lung penetrations but walked out under nurse assistance. Gerald Coleman the alleged assailant remains in county jail on an assault charge as police say the fight stemmed from a contentious relationship with a white woman.
A basement blaze at the Phelan hotel 736 South Montana threatened the three story brick structure. Smoke drove out residents as firemen confined the flames after an hour with 500 onlookers and two more alarms nearby.
Six people were killed when their car was struck by a Fort Worth and Denver passenger train at a grade crossing in Alword Texas last night. Joint funeral rites were planned.
A weather notice says Montana will be mostly fair Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday will be warmer in the extreme east portion of the state.
Chicago observers fail to connect six East St. Louis detainees with the St. Valentine’s Day massacre after witnesses deny identity. Thomas O’Connors identified for Plano bank robbery. Howard Lee and Jack Britt linked to Lincoln National Bank heist. Ed O’Hara’s fingerprint ties to a Terre Haute killing suspect. Writ of habeas corpus filed for all six. hearing set for tomorrow.
The newspapers note iced tea appeared in Butte restaurants yesterday signaling a sign of summer. The report mentions robins and flowering trees may be late but iced tea shows a seasonal shift in local menus.
A mob of about 300 rioters burned a Jesuit convent in Malaga and attacked nun housing at Seville. Riots spread to Saragossa Cordova Cadiz Bilbao and Seville with civil guards repelling the Seville assault. The Malaga mob damaged the archbishop's palace and set furnishings afire.
Aristide Briand announced his candidacy for the French presidency after a meeting with parliament members. A move to withdraw Paul Doumer’s candidacy failed, signaling a complex national assembly vote at Versailles to choose a successor to Gaston Doumergue.
Frank Scotten of Great Falls will head the Montana Society of Engineers for 1931 32 after the nominating committee led by Major C L Berrien submitted its report. The annual meeting in Butte on September 25 26 will formalize the slate. R P Newlands and B J Ornburn spoke at the meeting, which was chaired by A V Corry.
