The Des Moines Baptist Institution is closed and placed under police protection after two separate outbreaks. Authorities report continued concerns over safety and student welfare as investigations proceed.
Dr T T Shields ordered the Des Moines university closed indefinitely and placed under police protection after students disrupted the closing board session. The entire faculty including Dr Harry Wayman was dismissed amid disputes over modernization and fundamentalism.
Emerson captured the city grade school track championship at Clark Park with 55 points, Garfield second with 38 14, Longfellow third with 26. New records in the broad jump saw Harry Finburg of Garfield win at 14 feet 4 inches and Bob O Malley of Longfellow at 17 feet 4 1/2 inches. Babich of Grant and J Williams of Emerson matched four feet five inches in the middle weight high jump, and Emerson’s 440 yard relay won in the middle weight division.
Washington May 11 leaders fear a rift in the senate group backing the expert debenture plan. They worry attempts to add the debenture provision to the tariff bill if the farm relief bill stalls in the house. The plan aims to attach revenue legislation to the tariff measure amid house opposition.
Robert Maynard Hutchins, 30, arrives in Chicago to become president of the University of Chicago in a $75 million institution. Reporters crowd him as Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks watch from a window. He answers a question about his cigarette with a quick smile.
Mother's Day is celebrated across Butte with services in churches hospitals and on streets. Special services at the Christian church will seat about a hundred mothers in a dedicated section. The Weather Bureau issued flood warnings for the Rio Grande between Albuquerque and San Marcial in New Mexico and for the lower Blue river in Kansas. Bankful or higher stages are expected on the Smoky Hill and Kansas rivers with important rises forecast.
The crack units of the air corps head to Ohio for May 15 to May 25 maneuvers at Wright Field and Norton Field. Over 200 airplanes will participate in peace time demonstrations including long distance bombing and aerial reviews led from Columbus. The event features mock raids on New York and Cincinnati and a firepower display at Wright Field.
In Waukegan Illinois on May 11 John Bradshaw 25 of Zion City Illinois died when a two seat plane carrying Elmer Hobbs 27 and Carl Kerm 21 crashed after plunging 500 feet. Hobbs the pilot was not expected to survive and Kerm was seriously injured. Bradshaw left two children.

The eleventh annual Rocky Mountain region Girl Scout conference ends in Butte after delegates from six states vote on Salt Lake City as 1930 convention site and recommend seven national officers for elections in New York City next Wednesday. Delegates attended social events at the Country Club and Mrs. L. P. Sanders hosts. National director Mrs. Jane Deeter Rippin is expected to speak.
