The Butte business district will debut a colorful display at 12:55 Saturday as 215 flower boxes appear in front of shops and offices. This marks the start of the 1957 Clean-up Paint-up and Fix-up drive, with support from labor, civic groups, and schools to reduce health hazards.
A 72-year-old Butte woman, Susie Imala, suffered a compound fracture and other injuries after being struck by a car in the 2100 block of Harrison Avenue Friday evening. Driver Lynn Lovell, 22, allegedly failed to stop and was later detained and questioned. he admitted driving and is held in the city jail.
Commerce Secretary Sinclair Weeks announced a four man U S trade mission will participate in the Poznan Trade Fair in Poland this June. It will be the first U S mission under the international trade fair program with an official American exhibit from June 9 to 23.
Fresno patrolman F. H. Lewis was bitten Friday while responding to a call for assistance. The attacking canine was a police dog.
Gen. Gustavo Rojas Pinilla’s four year rule ended as soldiers and crowds clash near the Capitol. At least thirty died in panic and nine more were killed in Medelin when police opened fire. A five member military junta led by Maj. Gen. Gabriel Paris took power, with elections promised next year.
Senate investigators produced evidence that Teamsters President Dave Beck profited from a union widow fund. Donal Hedlund testified he and Beck shared an $11 585 profit on mortgage sales to Mrs Terry Leheney widow of Ray Leheney a labor leader and Beck trustee of the fund. Kennedy said the arrangement violated trustee laws and Beck defended the profits as well intentioned while Hedlund questioned ethics.
A wind shift helped firefighters contain a spreading forest fire near Plymouth Massachusetts with historic sites safe and the town calm. Rain began to fall as crews also worked to control major fires in Taunton Athol Montague and Fitchburg while fires in Maine New Hampshire and Vermont saw similar progress.
Scientific solution offered for the Anaconda outbreak that killed two daughters and sickened nine in the Duttenhofer family. The organism identified is shigellae a bacterium attacking intestines and stomach causing diarrhea. Officials say spread is usually by human contact and no food poisoning proved.
Berkeley former mayor Louis Bartlett aged 85 married Friday to Natalie Bartlett 75 widow of former Alameda mayor Francis H Bartlett. The ceremony links two Bay Area political families with Bartletts long involved in local government.
The House Appropriations Committee cuts 272 million dollars from the Agriculture Department budget citing poor agricultural conditions and calling for a new legislative approach. It recommends 3.69 billion dollars in new appropriations for the coming year and warns farm income has fallen amid rising costs and debt.
A two million dollar Navy flying boat named Trade Wind s Coral Sea with 16 aboard went out of control during a training flight near Oakland California. It plunged 10 000 feet then settled in mud near the bay. Two Air National Guard planes rescued all aboard. The vessel weighs 82 tons fully loaded and can carry cargo and troops.
The Butte Chamber of Commerce named E. P. Frizelle of Metals Bank and Trust Co and Tom J. Murray, a local auto dealer, to its board at Friday’s meeting in the Finlen Hotel. The group also debated federal aid for school construction and support for Anderson-Price bills on nuclear liability insurance, with a proposed cap of 500 million dollars per incident.

Maximums reflect 12 hour totals and minimums the 18 hours ending 5:30 p.m. Friday.

A large crowd gathered Friday afternoon as the Milwaukee Railroad dedicated its new depot at Idaho and Jossette streets Butte. Mayor W P Donnelly received a key symbolizing the railroad ties to the mining city and spoke of a golden anniversary next year. The one story brick station along the main line now avoids back-in moves saving about 20 minutes daily and serves with a ticket office at the depot and an additional office in Burrs Department Store.
