Chicago authorities struck at gangland to capture six kidnapers and bank robbers whose loot and ransom money reportedly ran into the millions. Accusers estimate proceeds at about $6,000,000 with $1,000,000 fixed as ransom in the Denver Mint holdup of 1922.
Montana Wild Life reports in its May issue on openers and gear for the season starting May 21 as the state game and fish commission heads into the spring. A separate item recounts a multi state gang raid, the capture of six suspects linked to a wave of robberies, and a March to Chicago with police detentions.
Concord, May 9. Mrs Criss Starnes, 75, and her daughter Ada, 40, were found beaten and hanged from a barn rafter on their farm near Concord. The daughter’s head was crushed. Coroner Dr I A Yow reported no motive. $265.89 was found hidden in the house. The farm is isolated about three-quarters of a mile from the nearest dwelling.
President Hoover moved the White House activities to Rapidan in Orange Virginia. He took Secretary Hurley and other officials to discuss ways to trim the war department budget while continuing public works. The group met at his camp cabin and planned further talks in the afternoon.
Lieutenant Clarence H. Schildhauer, co-pilot of the DC-X, prepared at his Philadelphia home on May 9 to fly to Natal, Brazil, to join the flying boat and help bring the seaplane to the United States, flying over established airways.

Firefighters saved the city section Saturday afternoon when a blaze broke out in the old stables of the Railway Express company on Oregon Avenue. High winds fueled flames but the fire was brought under control within minutes. Damage was slight due to the building’s negligible value. The barn stored horses and wagons in early days. three years ago the place was largely abandoned as the Express company modernized. Continued on Page 2 Col. 1.
President George Clemow of Jackson and other Montana Stock Growers officers were re elected at the 1931 convention closing in Bozeman. Resolutions urged state control of public lands oppose park additions and promote Montana meat in state institutions. Major E W Kelley urged a national educational campaign to protect live stock interests in the public domain.
Washington May 9 The Supreme Court may empower federal agents to seize furniture and fittings of any establishment selling liquor if Montana district court rules against them In a Butte case the government cites an old internal revenue statute to justify seizing all personal property on premises with untaxed goods The case stems from a soft drink shop fitted like a bar where liquor was seized and taken to a government storehouse
Dr. Albert A. Michelson, 78, renowned for measuring the speed of light and pioneering stellar distance work, died in Pasadena at 12:55 p.m. The noted scientist helped unlock methods to gauge distant suns beyond Earth’s life-giving rays.
Superior Judge Henry M. Willis freed Roy Vernon Quinn and Charles Lee Quinn on robbery charges after a jury failed to reach a verdict following all night deliberations. Six witnesses had identified the brothers as the Pasadena robbers in the May 26, 1930 case.
A Missouri freight train derailed near Pendennis Kansas killing six men and wounding another. Identified victims include Ora Rogers and Normal Rogers of Crowley Colorado. Theodore Johnson of Fort Warren Wyoming suffered severe injuries. coroner E P Deak said an arm amputation was required. Bodies moved to Dighton. Cause cited as a broken car journal.
In Muskegon Michigan William Launstein 55 died from a gunshot fired by his 12 year old son during a family quarrel. Authorities say the boy acted to protect his mother who he believed was in danger and likely will not face prosecution.
May 9 in Baja California Mexico reports martial law as investigation continues into attack on Mayor Miguel Angel Menendez and the fatal wounding of his secretary Roque Sabido Quijano. Menendez under technical arrest, fifth mayor by Tejada in months. Quijano died, others beaten. governor Trejo y Lerdo de Tejada to intervene.
Anaconda youth Mike Solan won the Montana marble title at a Hebgen park contest yesterday morning. He defeated defending champion Bob Milodragovich of Butte among six contestants in a program supervised by B. J. Gunderson of the YMCA and Larry Manion of the Kiwanis. Solan said he never thought he would win.
The Montana Association, Inc. executive committee, meeting in Bozeman, invites business group representatives to meet Friday May 5 to decide if Montana needs federal drought relief. Invitations go to the agricultural committee of the State Bankers' Association, stock growers, sheep men, farmers, railroads and Montana State College. Continued on Page 2, Col. 1.
In Walla Walla Washington George Schneider eighty nine? no sixty nine? was convicted of first degree murder for killing his 21 year old wife Betty with a meat cleaver two years ago. The jury of three women and nine men deliberated 26 hours and did not recommend the death penalty. He faces sentencing in superior court Monday.
In Valparaiso Indiana Judge Grant Crumpacker ordered Sheriff Birney Maxwell to recruit jurors by street canvass for the second gun murder trial of Virgil Kirkland charged with first degree murder in a Gary liquor party death last November. After eight days of failed panels the judge said no more veniremen panels and would rely on the sheriff to find disinterested jurors. Seven men passed by both sides and two tentatively accepted as court adjourned. The judge delayed court until Monday to allow a large pool for examination.
San Francisco attorney William H. Whitthorne was hit by an arrow at Lincoln Park golf links while bent over a putt. He reported the arrow came from a fair young archer aiming at a distant round target about 20 feet across in an exclusive girls' school archery class. He was taken to an emergency hospital for treatment.
Friends of Augustine Courtauld, a young British scientist, face a long wait to see him in England as he travels from the Greenland ice cap on a sledge with H. G. Watkins of the British Arctic Air Route expedition. They expect arrival at the expedition base near Angmasalik before continuing home.
Helena retained Montana’s volleyball championship at the state tournament held in Butte. In a round robin finish, Helena defeated Great Falls 15-3 14-16 15-1 to seal the title, while Electric City took second and Billings earned third by defeating Butte 6-15 15-13 15-12.
