Reports say disputes between China and Russia over war conduct surfaced as Allied forces held ground in Korea. Chinese forces planned a 600000-man assault with Russian planes and tanks that did not arrive, leading to a Chinese withdrawal as Allied patrols advanced.

Lewistown May 8 A Lewistown attorney Howard Gee was shot in the stomach Tuesday night near his law office on the fifth floor of the Montana building. Mrs. Molly Finley, about 50, wife of Joe Finley stockman and former Central Montana stockyards operator, is charged with first degree assault with a deadly weapon. She is jailed as authorities investigate the incident connected to a divorce action Gee represents against her. The injury is a serious pistol wound.
In San Francisco on May 8, Eric Johnston director of economic stabilization warned inflation already cancels the higher tax bill approved last year. He said defense spending may reach 50 billion dollars this fall and could rise to 90 billion with further inflation.
In Washington on May 8, House bankers committee members from both parties questioned Defense Mobilizer Charles E. Wilson about a tighter set of controls, including a two year extension of the defense production act and a partial freeze on farm prices and rent controls. The act speeds defense output and civilian price and other controls and expires June 30. Agriculture Chairman Harold Cooley predicted Congress will likely curb farm price ceilings, as Price Stabilizer Michael V. DiSalle faces a beef price order aiming to trim retail beef by 10 cents a pound by October 1. DiSalle defended the move as fair, while Rep. Paul Brown warned higher taxes with strict controls could cost the government money.
Washington May 8 The 18 member Wage Stabilization Board opened with a backlog of 1200 wage cases as it tackles disputes across meat packing shipbuilding and textiles. Eric Johnston forms a three member Salary Stabilization Board to set policy for non union white collar workers.
In Tehran on May 8 the outlawed Tudeh party urged Premier Mossa degh to expel United States military advisers, recognize the Chinese Communists, align with the Soviet Union, seize Bahrain islands oil fields, and abolish martial law. The letter also asked Iran to avoid becoming a base against the Soviet Union and rejected fighting for Britain and the United States.
Secretary of Defense Marshall warned that Russia could enter the Korean war without notice, cautioning against escalating to open conflict with China. He urged restraint after MacArthur’s casualty warnings, noting morale risks for UN troops and the uncertain outcome of a broader Sino-Soviet confrontation.
