President Roosevelt announced efforts to remove barriers to expansion in heavy goods sectors, especially home construction and railroad equipment, to raise employment. He tied his remarks to a relief appropriation debate and urged business to create more jobs after meetings with industrial leaders.
Marshall Dana, chairman of the Pacific Northwest Regional Planning commission, testifies with Senator Pope that Congress is unlikely to act on a single Federal agency for Bonneville and Grand Coulee power. A temporary Bonneville setup is the best they expect, as Dana backs the McNary-Steiner bill as interim authority and urges flood control and irrigation considerations and state involvement for Montana and Idaho.
A Denver banker and a lawyer were detained as investigators cracked a mail theft ring. A young girl named Doris Nelson, 14, was found dead in a hot bath at her home on Idaho Street after a morning of normal activity and a Hollywood scrapbook hobby.
Eleven persons including Oliver P. Arnold of the Denver National Bank and Charles Roberts a Denver attorney are charged with conspiracy to rob the US mails and to dispose of loot from numerous mail robberies. Postal inspectors and Denver detectives traced a $100 Liberty bond and solved 25 to 30 robberies across several states.
In Butte a Mother’s Day is planned with church services and special music. The First Presbyterian will feature Rev E J Groeneveld on Thoughts on Mother’s Day, with a duet by Elizabeth Shields and Madge Scott. United Congregational hosts Rev Paul Wearpenter on The Christian Family with morning and evening music. Welsh church presents Rev Fred Anstice on Mother Our Truest Friend with soloists and chorus.
Walter Le Sage a longtime Butte resident and 30 year furniture department worker at Hennessys died suddenly Thursday night in Kansas City Missouri A telegram to Butte relatives announced the death and a prior message said he was in serious condition Mrs Le Sage flew to Kansas City by plane that night The cause of death was not learned last night He had left Butte two weeks earlier to become a partner in a venture continued on page 2 column 3
Arthur M. Hyde former Missouri governor and ex secretary of agriculture denounces the New Deal as collectivist and autocratic in Bozeman speech. He says Republicans defend liberty and the children's inheritance as America faces a crossroads of free economics versus dictatorship.
Paris May 8. French political leaders joined forces to calm fears of a financial disaster as heavy gold shipments abroad and a volatile stock market reflected public anxiety. The cabinet planned a session with President Lebrun, while Leon Blum backed Premier Sarraut, warning premature resignation could trigger a market panic. He questioned whether government efforts would stabilize the franc.
WPA workers finished an overpass over Northern Pacific tracks linking the south side with Butte’s business district. The bridge forms a third arterial between Silver Bow and Floral Park areas, cutting 10 to 20 minutes from trips to downtown and easing traffic near Clark park. The long fill south of the bridge is to be surfaced with granite sand and oiling may follow guard rails installation.
A sharp earthquake shook south central Alaska at 7 20 this morning, rattling windows and waking sleepers in Seward but causing no damage. Seismic activity has been frequent here with no damage in recent months.
Sheriff Henry E. Burnell said James H. Folsom 35 of Skowhegan paroled reformatory inmate confessed to killing 7 year old Mary Proulx in Waterville last Sunday and 12 year old Annie Knights in Fairfield last October.
Federal officials say William Mahan is ready to plead to kidnapping and mail extortion over the $200000 George Weyerhaeuser abduction. U S Attorney J Charles Dennis expects Mahan to appear before Judge Edward Cushman at 9 am. If innocent, the Waleys may be brought to testify. 9 year old George Weyerhaeuser is lined up as key witness. Continued on page 3 column 5.
New Jersey Governor Harold G. Hoffman claimed full responsibility for the sequence that led Paul H. Wendel to a Trenton jail on murder charges amid Hauptmann's looming execution. Hoffman said he knew Wendel was seized and held, detailing reports from Ellis Parker Jr. Parker, facing extradition issues, handled the inquiry as Hoffman shifted blame and framed a political contrast with Franklin Fort.
The forecast for Montana calls for mostly fair weather on Saturday and Sunday with cooler temperatures on Saturday. Highs are expected in the mid 70s to low 80s and overnight lows in the 40s to 50s depending on location. Winds should be light.

Senator Park Trammell of Florida died at 8:35 P M EST at his Washington home. He was 60 and had been in ill health for weeks. Trammell served four terms in the Senate and led the naval committee. In private life he was a lawyer and once a newspaper publisher.
