House Democrats failed to secure a $700 million earmark from the $1.425 billion relief fund at a caucus vote. They shifted their pressure to a $350 million target and aimed to move the deficiency bill, carrying the relief funds, to a floor vote with the bill unchanged from committee.
Since October the league, Britain, and Emperor Haile Selassie trusted two expert groups. Military advisers said Italy could not conquer Ethiopia in one campaign, while financial experts doubted a second campaign could be financed. The military forecast proved disastrously wrong, bringing a stunning league defeat, Britain a loss of prestige, and the Emperor’s throne.
Glen H Rice of Jefferson City Missouri was chosen as physical director for the Butte Y M C A. He will arrive June 1 to assume duties after seven years as athletic coach and physical director in Jefferson City schools. Rice, 31, married with a three year old daughter, holds a B S from Central Missouri State Teachers College.
Roy E. Ayers of Lewistown and congressman from Montana's Second District filed with the secretary of state for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. His platform calls for hydro and gas taxes, tax reform on real estate, labor protections, highway and irrigation expansion, a farm union program, and a balanced budget with no overdrafts.
Work starts Monday on a new St. Lawrence parish school in Walkerville replacing the destroyed building. The $20,000 general contract covers a one story frame structure with a large basement gymnasium and kitchen. Architect is George H. Shanley of Great Falls.
Dispatches report Italian Fascists seize a French railroad in Ethiopia and aim to subjugate the south with Jijiga and Harar as targets. The grand council and cabinet plan a decree to annex Ethiopia and declare King Victor Emmanuel emperor. A 50,000 strong crowd cheered Truce in a victory display at Palazzo Venezia.

The Montana forecast calls for generally fair conditions Friday and Saturday with a warmer stretch in the extreme east on Friday. Overnight and daytime temperatures are expected to trend upward across the region.
Berlin reports the German foreign office is surprised and suspicious over the British questionnaire on Hitler's peace proposals for Europe. It notes the omission of any queries about Rhine fortifications and fears Britain and France may reassemble the Stresa front with Mussolini.
The Dutch steamer Alphard sank in the North Sea after a collision with the Hamburg American liner New York. All 26 crew members were saved.
Miss Beryl Wilson city clerk sketched a man who had sought supper Tuesday night. The drawing led to the arrest of Henry Hylton, later identified by Mrs. Theo Maki of 361 East Granite Street as the stranger who threatened her. Hylton was booked on state vagrancy charges by Officers Riley, O Connor, Sullivan and O Keefe at 1 PM.
Congress sent half of a 1.2 billion defense package to the White House while debating the naval appropriation. The War Department bill would raise Army strength to 165000 with 565 aircraft and 8.5 million for seacoast defense, assigning 383.1 million to military needs and the rest to river and harbor projects. The naval bill authorizes two new ships.
Montana officials told a Senate committee they seek protection of state water rights in any Columbia River Basin power legislation. Governor Holt’s representative L A Campbell outlined protective measures and urged a federal power agency only if Montana interests are fully safeguarded.
Arthur J. Baker Jr. of Carroll College won the state collegiate oratorical contest held in Bozeman May 7. Roy Smith of Montana School of Mines finished second, with Leroy Purvis of the University of Montana third. Other speakers included James McCulley Dillon State Normal College Ralph Tripp Interstate Union College and Finn of Montana State College.
Sheriff Lawrence Weir reports a confidential letter may have aided in arresting William Mahan, alias William Dainard, noting a local woman close to Mahan received a keyed letter this morning and the San Francisco Chief of Police may be asked to verify the address without disclosure.
Sheriff investigators traced letters from 1927 to a Butte woman known as Patsy Dainard. The letters moved through several hands before delivery, guiding authorities to a key suspect and revealing the long running track of the case.
William Mahan, last of the big money kidnapers, was captured in San Francisco and flown to Tacoma to face charges for the $200,000 abduction of George Weyerhaeuser. He yielded $13,000 more in recovery, totaling about $35,000. $65,000 remains unaccounted for. He admitted identity but made no admission to the crime.
Tuscola Illinois May 7 Hubert Price denied intoxication after rear ending John Morris’s car. He said the impact forced him to swallow his cud of tobacco making him ill. Police Magistrate N W Albritton fined him $100.
Helena May 17 The State Highway commission will open bids here tomorrow on ten road construction and improvement projects totaling between 650000 and 700000 dollars The list includes jobs held over from prior lettings and completes contracts proposed in the state's 11000000 highway program financed by the last funds available No more bids until the new fiscal year begins in July
Aboard the Zeppelin Hindenburg over the North Atlantic on May 17, Commander Hugo Eckner predicted a possible arrival in New York early Saturday. The airship, traveling over 80 miles per hour, aimed to beat the Normandie’s transatlantic record as passengers heard a piano recital by Frana Wagner. The Hindenburg departed Friedrichshafen at 9:30 p.m. local time Wednesday.
