More than 850 residents packed a Deer Lodge County meeting in Anaconda to challenge property tax assessments and the state reclassification act. Sen. John L. McKeon was elected association chairman as land values were reported to have jumped up to 400 percent for land and 300 percent for improvements. The 1957 act takes effect July 1962.
Charles Reed convicted in police court on April 24 for school zone speeding posted a $50 property bond to guarantee attendance for district court proceedings on his appeal. He was fined $25 after a trial without jury. officers testified Reed drove 30 mph in a 15 mph school zone on East Front. Reed, unrepresented, claimed speeds of not more than 15 mph. He gave oral notice of appeal to district court. Bond sureties are William Kingston and Albert Peterson.
The Kids and Kayuse club will plant 500 trees on Basin Creek on Saturday as part of Montana Conservation Week. Seedlings from the Forest Service nursery in Missoula will be used with supervision from Deer Lodge National Forest personnel led by Ranger Henry Bate.

Snow and fog hindered search efforts while authorities speculated the plane may have crashed with fuel exhausted by 11 45 a m. No contact was made with the pilot, and sightings near Kalispell Lolo and Noxon were not the missing craft. The aircraft reportedly belonged to Kenneth Drew of Ovando, who planned to meet Drew in Missoula.
President Kennedy formed a superagency and advisory board led by Dr. James R. Killian Jr to review vital intelligence work. The move prompts Senate hearings on a joint congressional committee to oversee the CIA, with Senate Democratic Leader Mansfield supporting hearings on McCarthy’s watchdog proposal.
Cape Canaveral reports optimistic weather as countdown nears final phase for Alan B. Shepard aboard the Redstone Mercury capsule. If conditions hold, Shepard aims for a 7 a.m. EST liftoff with eight-mile visibility and eight-knot winds, recovery teams set for an 18 000-foot descent and sea pickup 290 miles out.
Two 26 year old state prison escapees John Carlson and Curtis Thorson fled Deer Lodge Tuesday night. They are believed wandering near Butte in a Thursday snowstorm after stealing horses and looting two ranches. Authorities branded them dangerous and armed as they eluded capture continuing their flight.
Navy balloon team soared to about 113 500 feet above the Gulf of Mexico setting a new height record. Cmdr. Malcom Ross was rescued, Lt. Cmdr. Victor G. Prather died after falling from a helicopter sling while being lifted. The gondola landed safely and the balloon detached as planned.
More than 500 visitors are expected Friday night and Saturday for Bagdad Temple's golden jubilee ceremony marking fifty years since the founding of the Ancient Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine in North America. Masonic Temple in Butte hosts events with multiple Shrine units, a Saturday parade at 11 a.m. led by Nobles Arlo Axelson and E. G. Leipheimer Jr., and a route through West Park Idaho Broadway to conclude at the temple. The procession features Salish Mounted Patrol, Deer Lodge Oriental Band, Bagdad Band, clowns, Arab Patrol, Provost Guard, Desert Patrol, Midget Auto Patrol, and the rope gang, among others.
Anaconda judge dissolves a temporary restraining order blocking a preventive maintenance system at Anaconda Reduction Works after a petition by Metal Trades Council. Hearing set for May 10. council alleges unilateral changes to working conditions without contract reference and proposes overseers rather than skilled foremen.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk said Russian supplied guerrillas are pressing to seize South Viet Nam and pledged full U S aid to defend the country. He noted Laos cease fire prospects look favorable and confirmed Kennedy ordered stepped up military assistance including training and about 41 million dollars in arms next year. Rusk did not rule out U S military intervention if required. He spoke at his final news conference before an NATO Oslo trip.
Cahill-Mooney Construction Reardon Plumbing and Heating and Brilliant Neon of Butte led base bids for the Silver Bow County airport terminal project with a total of 261,914 dollars, narrowly under the county estimate of 264,000. Other bidders included Taylor-Mcdonnell, Waddell Helena and Olsen Butte. an alternate lighting and power renovation bid was also noted.
Laos government accepts Souvanna Phouma invitation to a frontline peace conference but will send only military representatives. The meeting near Hin Heup, 50 miles north of Vientiane, may include Pathet Lao, neutralists, and royal military envoys. Brig. Gen. Sing Rattanasamay will lead the government delegation.
Rear Adm. George Crosby Towner spoke to Butte Rotary Club praising naval aviation as a core element of seapower. He noted Navy’s progress since 1911 and cited three attack carriers with Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean and Seventh Fleet in the Far East ready for any contingency.
