Premier Daladier announced a stabilized franc rate to be set tomorrow after the third postwar devaluation. He said no new expenditures or burdens would be imposed and flagged a national defense loan of about 15 billion francs to let French citizens vote on patriotism.
In Castel Gandolfo Pope Pius XI denounces the Rome display of Nazi swastikas and Hitler's Rome visit. He tells 500 newlyweds that the swastikas are not Christ's cross, urging prayer for mercy amid church-state tensions with Germany. Hitler meets church officials and visits the Pantheon during the day.
Three Montana School of Mines seniors John C. Archibald Jr Clarence J. Mitchell and Raymond A. Nelson are finalists for the Montana Society of Engineers medal. Winners to be chosen by a committee after interviews and announced at commencement June 3 in Bozeman with panel members from industry and state agencies.
At a United States Chamber of Commerce gathering in Washington the A F of L proposed cooperation with private industry to absorb unemployed workers. The federation stressed private ownership and the right to bargain collectively, urging an end to industrial warfare while criticizing the Wagner Act and the National Labor Relations Board.
The forecast calls for generally fair conditions in Montana on Thursday and Friday with little change in temperatures.
Premature birth of sextuplets and a boy reported in Cayama near Bayamo Oriente province. Senora Rafaela Casanova de Corrías and the mother and children were said to be doing well. Juan Morales municipal judge of Canto Embaracadero confirmed the birth. Bayamo officials and guards traveled to Cayama to verify details.
The State Water Conservation Board formally accepted the Ruby River storage dam in Madison County as completed. The $520000 project, financed by a $234000 PWA grant and $286000 loan, will irrigate 30000 acres from 1100 acre foot reservoir. Ackley Lake project near Hobson also approved as completed.

Helena May 4 Gov Roy E Ayers said a 12 man committee named by Harry J Kelly of Kalispell to plan raising funds to match federal aid highway money will meet in Helena on May 14 Kelly leads the original 57 member panel to study Montana highway funds Ayers warns the state must raise about 3 million dollars in the next two years or risk losing over 6 million in federal matching highway funds most road work would be halted statewide if funds are not secured.
Shanghai May 5. Chinese say they advanced 12 miles northeast of Taierhchwang and repulsed a Japanese attack at Nikon. A flying column cut Japanese communications near Tanchang Lini. Chinese sources claim 34 000 Japanese casualties around Tancheng and Pihsien as Lunghai railway faces threat. Japanese deny information from Shantung sector fueling observer speculation on Japan’s remaining offensive strength.
Missoula May 4. State University hosts its 35th interscholastic meet with entries mailed by midnight Tuesday from at least 112 Montana high schools. By late today 108 schools entered sports and declamatory events, three entered Little Theater, and one had state entries only. contests total exceed 800 contestants.
A convict in Washington state muttered a few words that recalled the 18 year old disappearance of Mrs. Ernest LaCasse and Ole Larson from Butte and Anaconda. They have never been found.
